An unusual C. M. Giulini Concerto Recording

Post by Lance » Wed Oct 15, 2014 2:13 am

Some know that I have been building a three-part radio series on conductor Carlo Maria Giulini. Tons of his recordings have been reissued in nicely priced boxed sets ... DGG, EMI, Decca and others. One work that hasn't surfaced— concerto-wise—is Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. Testament [1434] issued this concerto with pianist Michel Block and the Berlin Philharmonic. Also on the disc is Ravel's Ma mère l'oye-Suite and Debussy's La Mer. This material is from the vaults of Deutschlandradio Kultur, Berlin, Germany who authorized Testament to issue the broadcast made on January 10, 1978 at Berlin's Philharmonie. Near as I can determine, this is the only time Giulini recorded the work (for either radio or commercially). The remastering was done by Paul Baily at ReSound, who is well known for his work for the EMI label. A nice addition to the massive Giulini discography. •

When she started to play, Mr. Steinway came down and personally
rubbed his name off the piano. [Speaking about pianist &*$#@+#]
