Please, please, please!!!

Post by Lance » Mon Nov 17, 2014 2:31 pm

Some threads have gotten nasty showing little respect. Nobody should be calling anybody a NAZI. This is a Forum that is supposed to be harmonious where we can make friends.

Auntie Lynn, we all recognize your talents and proficiency in the world of music, but please simmer down on name-calling. CMG has been around a long time. I still get hundreds of requests to join each week and most of them are bogus, such as they are for most forums. I am uninterested in having great numbers of people but only those who like to discuss what we like: classical music, whether live or on recordings.

Respectfully, I ask this.

As admonitions are being applied selectively here, I would note that the abuse, lies, deceptions
and downright libel heaped upon my person, my occupation, my employer(s) and my literacy
really need to stop. I have seen the abuse channeled at other posters here by the posters who
think they control this site; it is shameful and conveniently overlooked. Also attacks on the
Catholic Church, the conservative position, womens’ rights, working musicians, the First
Amendment, etc. etc. need to stop.

An impartial review of the facts will reveal that it is not me who starts these flame wars.

I can see you have all been waiting breathlessly to hear from me; however, I have to go hit the
keyboard and I have to let you go now. I am the most peace-loving lady in the world, but if you
come after me, you will find me.

Once more with feeling, pax vobiscum!

Personally, I have no objection to the Admin delete button being hit in extreme cases, and the ban tool being used if someone can't restrain themselves enough to keep simple conversations from spinning out of control. This is just an internet forum. It isn't the Supreme Court. People need to keep it light, and if they can't, they should earn a "time out".

I am more for free speech. The cure for bad speech is good speech, not censorship.

But, Lance, you need to learn that that applies to both sides of the argument. The question, "Who made you the group's Nazi?" or words to that effect seems to me appropriate under the circumstances. Granted, Auntie Lynn has not, to my knowledge, sent anyone away to an extermination camp. She's more like a Nazi of the 20's than the 30's: you start with the Big Lie, and get people to accept that. John F's retort signals that neither he nor, judging by the affirmative response of many to his statement, the rest of us are going to let her get away with doing that to us. That's a good thing, Lance, not a bad thing.

P.S. This applies to Randall aka rwetmore, too.

This is his forum. You're in his house enjoying his hospitality. You don't go over to someone's house and drink their booze and eat their food and call them a Nazi. If you do, you deserve to be booted to the curb.

There is a difference here, Randall may be annoying in his posts, but he never lashes out, he has broken no rules.

Auntie Lynn has deliberately done so numerous times in the last 48 hours. I did not see the Thread before Lsnce deleted it, but I have had numerous complaints from other members about it.

If she wants to get banned so she can boast about it in other Borads then I suggest we do just that. We have nothing to be ashamed of, we are protecting our community.

Friendships were strained yesterday, lots of nasty things were said. I'd let it go in the pub, but not in here, this is sacred ground.

Classical music guide has "house rules" which are posted in every forum, and which members are expected to follow if they wish the privilege of participating here. I don't know how many of us have actually read the rules. For those who haven't, here are the relevant parts:
The Site Administrators oppose limitations of any kind on free speech. However, we are responsible for the character of the entire site and the enjoyment of the many who come here. Experience has shown us that people will get into arguments and will get carried away with their own eloquence, wit, or combativeness, turning what should be a spirited but civil exchange of opinions into flame wars, name-calling free-for-alls, and other brawls that diminish the cyberexperience for all visitors to the Classical Music Guide. Because human nature is what it is, we have a few rules that we expect members to follow...

1. The first and only rule of conduct is civility. Disagreement is okay. Disagreeableness is not. No member has a right to disturb the quiet enjoyment of this forum by others. If you wouldn’t say what you are about to say to someone standing right in front of you, don’t say it to another member in a post.

2. Members agree to refrain from the following behaviors:
a. Verbally abusing other posters...

3. Posting to this site will be deemed consent to the CMG policies.

4. Posts containing the behaviors listed in paragraph 2 above will be locked or deleted as the Site Administrators deem appropriate...

6. Complaint procedure:
a. If a member finds comments by another member personally abusive or offensive, the first line of defense is for the offended member to ignore the offender and his or her posts.
b. If that becomes impossible, the second line of defense is for the offended member to communicate privately with the offender.
c. If that doesn’t work, the offended member should bring the complaint to the Site Administrators, who will take appropriate action...

7. Banning a member:
a. The Site Administrators will not ban any member without discussing the proposed action with that member first.
b. However, this process has a short life span and if we don’t see noticeable improvement within a reasonable period of time, we will act, notwithstanding objections from the offending member, other members, or non-members...
Lance is the site administrator. This situation has been brought to his attention, and he has posted a public message in an attempt to restore civility and good order. It's up to him to decide whether the response to his message has been acceptable and, if not, what further needs to be done. Those who have opinions about this would do better to tell him in a private message; as the house rules also say, "the Site Administrators do not monitor the BBS 24/7."

Those who wish to ignore a particular member and his/her posts can easily do so by using the forum software's Friends & Foes filter in the User Control Panel.

Pompous pronouncements are not worth the cyberspace they are written on. The administrator
has asked for an end to this nonsense yet you all keep running after me. What is apparently not
realized or admitted here is that others share my observations about this site. What's the matter with you
people anyway - don't you have anything else to do? I am not the only person in this world,
although some seem to think so...

Administration has requested Peace, I have requested Peace (twice or more), other people have
requested Peace... Still I continue to be stalked. The irony is, there is no intelligence, sagacity,
insight, cumulative wisdom or help here that makes it worth while. This is no longer a music
forum, the majority of recent posts have involved the on-going Fight Club (sorry Brad). The Real
World out there feels this site consists of a bunch of old guys talking to each other about nothing
and woe betide anyone who disagrees and that’s not just my opinion. Anyway, with IMSLP you
don’t need this place at all.

I am not the one who thinks I am the best; the people who hire me say I am the best. As long as
their names are on the bottom line, that's what counts...

What's wrong with a bunch of old guys talking about nothing? Happens all over the world. Old women too. Does no one any harm.
The polite thing to do is to leave them in peace. Just go to those boards that are so much more intelligent and inviting than CMG, and grace them with your wisdom and insight, where they have the ability to appreciate what we clearly do not.

Run home to mommie? Remember what you just said, AL. We are old guys. My mommie died in March, 2001. I'm willing to bet that that's true of most of the old guys on this forum.

And, pray tell, what is so contemptible about old guys? Why are we to be denied the franchise, even the franchise of the tongue and the pen, just cuz we're old guys? And since you yourself are an auntie, Auntie Lynn, maybe you should check with your nieces and nephews about how relevant THEY think YOU are.

There must be a medical name for your condition, I can't think of it right now, but you behavior is without question a little bizarre, I'd be far more embarrassed about what you write on our site, than what you right about us on the other site, if you really think you are being stalked, and young men are watching your every move in awe, then I'd say you were nuttier than a fruit cake at this point.

I find it sad to watch another person lose their mind in a public forum, one for which you have the utmost contempt. Where it's inhabited by a bunch of old geezers who care not one whit about you, and where you think you should be the center of attention.

As Houdini said, it's all just a delusion.

Karl just don't know-I've been in forums for some time now but have never encountered messages quite like hers--at first I thought maybe she is a troll but since people know her in a musical way it must be some sort of psychological issue--just don't know--what I do know is the abusive messages should be stopped--that is of some importance to me! I believe they have stopped, at least for the moment, and hopefully, for the future. I appreciate cooperation in all regards to retaining peace and harmony on CMG. Let's return to the subject of MUSIC. The Pub, I'm less worried about, since the topics are open except for classical music.

Thank you one and all!

Well, Lance, it's your own fault. :) When the proprietor of the site gives a thread a subject like "Please, please, please!!!", naturally everyone will want to know what he wants of them. And when the last posted message in the thread is also from the proprietor, they'll want to know what he wants now. If you'd given it a descriptive subject, like "Civility, please!", the response would undoubtedly have been more focused and the number of views inspired by mere curiosity would therefore have been less.
