Amazon Classical Music Forum Slaps Our Faces............!
This is very upsetting.....Please comment, my fellow CMGers. Quote below:
'Auntie Lynn says:
Don't look now, but this site is so far superior to everything else out there...CMG has been hijacked by a bunch of leftists with no musical credentials, Piano World has several good people but it's kind of specialized, other sites are VERY difficult to navigate and some even charge $$ to get in. We have some great, knowledgeable people here - Piso, Zadok, Ken, Mandryka (plus a bunch of kinda cute guys) - whether you agree with them or not and least they know what's going on. Piano World had a GREAT picture of Nikolai Zverev ( Wikipedia has this) and his students which I never would have found otherwise. More later, gotta run...'
Regards,
Mel

Re: Amazon Classical Music Forum Slaps Our Faces............
She does not know what she is talking about, she plays piano for ballet dancers I think, so what...
John plays the organ
Heck the bassoon
Diego is musician
Joe Patris, Donald Isler, Harris all play piano.
Karl Henning is a Composer, so is Iced Note.
Guitarist is, I wonder what?
Maestro is a Conductor
John F knows more than anyone I know about classical music, seriously, he does.
Lance has tuned more pianos for more people than most others, his knowledge encyclopedic.
I'm sure if I had the time i'd list more, I know we have more 'real musicians'
Aunty Lynn is a hangover from the old Right Wing days.
I guess Reb Lem and Barney irk her, well she has always irked me. Besides, I play the fool quite well.
If we are lucky she will migrate to Amazon, where all the cute guys are.

I remember responding to that post or one like it not long ago, but now I can't find the thread in CMG. Can you post a link?
Anyway, here's a link to Amazon's classical music forum. Judge for yourself.
http://www.amazon.com/forum/classical%2 ... YQ79OVJBUQ
They also have an opera forum:
http://www.amazon.com/forum/opera/ref=r ... P9T15QNRQH
These seem to me pretty good, with enough intelligent and articulate posters to make them worthwhile. At least some of the posters are the same people who write customer reviews of classical CDs on Amazon. Whether that forum is "far superior" to CMG, as Auntie Lynn would have it, is another matter. Some of our discussions have reached a level of knowledgeability and sophistication about music, musicians, organizations, performances, and recordings that I haven't found in the admittedly small sample of Amazon posts I've just read. As for "musical credentials," if that matters - for me what counts isn't credentials but content - quite a few CMG members are professional musicians and composers, as Chalkperson has just spelled out. I guess I'm a professional too, from my years in classical music radio programming and as a paid record reviewer in "Fanfare." If the Amazon forum's members are comparable in this respect, it doesn't show in their pseudonyms or in the messages I've read. Here, I'm constantly learning things from members' posts that I didn't already know; there, not so much.
Participation in the Amazon forums is restricted to amazon.com customers. "Anyone who has purchased items from Amazon and is in good standing in the Amazon.com community can reply to an existing discussion or start a new one." I expect most of us qualify - and how! "All visitors to Amazon.com can read any current discussion" - same as here. Their policy statement:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/forum/content/ ... cd_et_d_gl
I don't see why anyone shouldn't participate in both forums if they can. As for Auntie Lynn's view of Classical Music Guide, consider the source. (no ) You don't need her to tell you whether CMG is worth belonging to.

That could be me-I've bought from Amazon--they delivered a LCD TV for me white glove style! Still my latest computer didn't come from them-B and H! Maybe I'm not in good standing with Amazon? Regards, LenJohn F wrote:

I don't remember a similar Post John, but I could easily be wrong, I do try and keep an eye on every Thread.
Auntie Lynn is a stranger poster than most, i'd say a lot of her posts are questionable in terms of her pianistic claims, she likes rocking this boat, but it's almost always because her politics differ from most of us. As always politics ruins everything.
Also, if you say something online it always gets back to the source, often quite quickly.
I see the Thread on Marches is missing, did I miss something today, I have not checked in here since last night due to working on my Show.
Did somebody forget those immortal words from Rodney King perhaps.
"Can't we all just get along."
I, for one have never even thought about another Forum, this is the best one I know of, as you know too.

stenka razin quotes Auntie Lynn from somewhere, and I believe it was here, but of course I could be wrong. CMG and Google searches don't find it. The thread on marches has been deleted, probably by Lance at the time he posted "Please, please, please!!!" Fine with me.

I haven't done anything. Gee, officer Krupky!
It's Jbuck she can't stand, the ham-fisted one-armed know-it-all who has never done anything more worth while than play to a tone-deaf kindergarten group (have I summed up her opinion reasonably well, Jbuck?).
I fail to see how anyone could take offence at sweet-natured, innocent ol'me!

"As a little kid, I was literally raised on Egon Petri's recordings - each one is a real gem - little did I know that one day, I would work with this man...
Mr. Petri calls up my teacher Vlad (they are old friends) and sez: "hey, there, Columbia is re-releasing some of my old recordings - are you going to buy any?"
Vlad sez: Sure, if the music's any good.."
If true her credentials seem great but her manners-awful! Regards, Len

Re: Amazon Classical Music Forum Slaps Our Faces............
Egon Petri had a great many pupils throughout his life and especially toward the end of it when he taught at Mills College and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Here's a partial list, courtesy of Wikipedia, headed by a surprising name:
Victor Borge (1909–2000)
Lee Hoiby (1926–2011)
Eugene Istomin
Grant Johannesen
Gunnar Johansen (1906–1991)
Alfred Kanwischer
Leonard Klein
Ernst Levy
Alexander Libermann
Lois Maer
Ozan Marsh (1920–1992)
Phillip Morgan
Balys Dvarionas (1904-1972)
John Moriarty (born 1930)
John Ogdon (1937–1989)
Ruth Orr
Newman Powell
Ruth Preusser
Alice Ray
Daniell Revenaugh
Forrest Robinson
Friedrich Schnapp (1900–1983)
Robert Sheldon
Larry Sitsky (born 1934)
John Sweeney
Vitya Vronsky (1909–1992)
Gordon Watson
Earl Wild (1915–2010)
Terry Wohl
Many though not all of those with major careers studied with Petri in the 1920s or earlier. Quite a few in the list, though none of the better known ones, attended Mills College.

For the classical music fan who is prepared to tread carefully, dot the i's and cross the t's as they say, and who chooses every single word carefully lest he/she be pursued and challenged relentlessly, this is a GREAT site.
For the regular browser like me who loves classical music and who has almost given up posting here but who loves to read the current and historical threads on CMG this is a GREAT site.

I cannot believe that you are all so desperate for my attentions that you chase me to the outer
limits of cyberspace. If you had any real innards you would try Amazon’s Politics Forum. That’s
where defenders of BHO and his f-t b-tt wife (The Prisoner in the White House) end up in the
Cuisinart. BTW, I hope she wears a better dress to the Kennedy’s this year. That green mess last
year made her look like Mahatma Ghandi in a high wind. At least it covered up her f-t b-tt and
didn’t look like it was made out of toilet paper. Doesn’t she have handlers who can tell her she
looks awful?? At least at Amazon Pol, you will find some real thinkers (and real facts), not dazed
political hacks like Bucky Beaver and his indoctrinated, wall-eyed minions.
108 hits on Lance’s post - guess that tells you who matters around here.
Don’t look now, but a list of members who play the kazoo does not constitute musical
credentials...
Surprise, surprise - there would appear to be other people that feel the same way over at Amazon;
let’s see you spin THAT into the mix here.
And we’ll see if the moderator(s) apply a little even-handedness to these boards...

Brendan was/is a countryman of yours, Barney, and of long standing. I think perhaps he was from Melbourne (may be misrembering that). He was personally insulting to me many times, at the level of something like "If you had half a brain." We have had a number of posters who have made significant musical posts who have not been able to resist reverting to their darker sides in terms of personal engagement. Pray God I may never submit to that tendency myself, and thank God that is no longer a significant problem on this board.barney wrote:Who were Brendan and Saul? Saul was/is an overgrown boy from NYC who had his merits too but was obsessed with certain topics, and I just won't go into it, as I'm sure neither will Chalkie who knows even more about it. Ancient history.
There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Correct, I do not discuss online any Members who were deactivated, the first reason being that they cannot reply or defend themselves so it would be unfair.jbuck919 wrote:Brendan was/is a countryman of yours, Barney, and of long standing. The second reason being that the time spent on these individuals is huge, dozens of PM's are sent, their cases discussed thoroughly, the last thing i'm going to do is go into their cases, that's a matter for the Administrators only.
What makes this case unusual is that Auntie Lynn is doing it in the Chatterbox, not the Pub.
So we lost a very interesting Thread, when one individual causes trouble and a Thread is pulled then all the Members suffer.
The Chatterbox is hallowed ground, passionate discussion about Music is allowed, but not politics and certainly not insults to a number of our long standing members.
I have now been forwarded a number of the comments from that Thread. Auntie Lynn's comments were way out of line, and highly offensive in nature.

I agree. It was a good thread, and it had MY name on it, and was thus immensely flattering. That it turned to insults and discord is probably also appropriate.
Re: Amazon Classical Music Forum Slaps Our Faces............
Yes, I can see why. My first few years I never went on the pub. That's probably why I didn't notice him. Well, it is the internet, so a certain amount of stupidity should be expected.
And to end the suspense, yes, I am a guitarist and life-long lover of classical music--I count myself as reasonably knowledgeable.

And to end the suspense, YOU have never been in doubt, and all one would wish is that you would post more often. The people who are problematic do not make apologetic posts, let alone gratuitous ones.Guitarist wrote:Well, it is the internet, so a certain amount of stupidity should be expected.

Thanks. That's good news.
What about you, Sean? Why don't you post much now? Is it because we're a bunch of old guys talking about nothing, and you're not old?

Re: Amazon Classical Music Forum Slaps Our Faces............
Saul's right-wing posts made me so furious that I got into some rather unpleasant exchanges with him and the great Corlyss banned me from this forum for a long time. I do not have fond memories of those Pub days and am avoiding that site for the most part, now that I'm back at CMF.
Auntie Lynne's views, typified by her disgraceful comments about the President and his wife, label her for who and what she is. I'll leave it at that.

Hi Barney, put off by a bunch of old guys? No, perish the thought, sure I am at the wrong side of fifty. If the truth be told I have always been careful when posting here lest I incur the ire or even the wrath of some hyper-sensitive folk. A couple of years ago I happened to start a thread here in the chatterbox and on our local Dublin Classical forum. Naturally, the thread in Dublin was accepted at face value. Unfortunately, I had the indecency to use the word 'gorgeous' to describe a highly successful young artist and I did so in the title of the thread. I use it as a term of endearment with my daughter and my nieces, etc. When this grave offence was brought to my attention I immediately removed the offensive word from the title, however, the protagonist had to pursue me relentlessly on this matter and even went and sought the advice of feminists to ensure that he was right to pursue me to the nth degree. He went on to accuse me -- in my absence -- of meaning 'hot' rather than 'gorgeous', well I just got a pain in my bot-tom and so I have largely given up posting here but I do love to read the highly informative threads. He took all the good out of it for me, but that's me.barney wrote:That's good news.

I don't remember that at all. We use gorgeous in Australia both ways, so I would have understood your reference.
But that's past now. Time to move on... and get involved again.

Sean, don't let that one experience discourage you. I'm sure that most of us would welcome your posts.Seán wrote: He went on to accuse me -- in my absence -- of meaning 'hot' rather than 'gorgeous', well I just got a pain in my bot-tom and so I have largely given up posting here but I do love to read the highly informative threads. And speaking of gorgeous women, in response to Auntie Lynn's comments, I think that Michele Obama is a beautiful woman, and dresses beautifully as well. So there!

Every sane person loves Michele Obama. (The US has never had an unlovable first lady, including in retrospect Nancy Reagan and in spite of what happened to her Mary Lincoln.) We just have one member who is not sane. Welcome back, Séan.

Michelle needs to get her teeth fixed and get serious lipo on her rear. There - I’ve fed you for the
day. BTW, what ever happened to Lance’s request that we go back to talking about music??
That’s what I figured.
