Vienna Philharmonic set - another triumph

Post by barney » Thu Nov 20, 2014 4:29 pm

My Vienna Philharmonic orchestral edition set has arrived, and I am enjoying it enormously. So many of these mega box-sets are superb, and this certainly is. It has the Lisa Della Casa/Karl Boehm Four Last Songs praised in a recent thread, to name just one delight. It has 65 CDs but is oddly described as 64 CDs plus a bonus CD. Don't understand that.
Here is the list. Are there any in particular that CMGers know and love? I'll tell you the ones I already highly esteem later.

That collection is of course pretty selective. Odd to say that about a 65-cd set, but if all Decca's VPO recordings were reissued, even omitting the complete and excerpted operas, they'd be wall to wall. :) Enjoy!

This box obviously needed a drink, perhaps the Opera Box could resist the urge to drink and join us in the Chatterbox.

Yes, sorry about that. I must have been in the pub when I started it, and over-imbibed and forgot where I was. If you could move it, Chalkie, I would be grateful.

Moved topic ... the 65-CD set looks glorious. I have much of it on original CD issues. I may pass on this one!

I, too, just received my copy of this mega-box, and I started with Disc 1, the Haydn "Surprise" Symphony conducted by Monteux. What immediately struck me was the quality of this 1959 stereo recording. Beautiful, full sound. What I pondered afterwards was this particular conductor doing Haydn. I know this recording has been out there since at least 1960, but this is my first hearing, and I'm sorry I missed it all these years.

The second symphony of the disc is the Haydn 101, "The Clock", again with Monteux. That's followed by a third work, the 104 "London" Symphony, this one a mono recording with Karajan.

After my experience with the "Surprise", I can't wait to dig into the remainder of this treasure trove. I'm sure many more surprises await.

This is a Christmas come early!

I'm thinking out loud about the MONTEUX inclusions in this big 65-CD mega-box. It would not surprise me a bit if Decca will come forth with their answer to RCA's newly-released Monteux Edition (40 CDs) showing on another thread hereon. I have many on Decca CDs that were issued, but I'm sure there is more on Decca that has not been reissued. Stay posted!

Actually Lance, Barney indicates that it's only a 64 CD box with a bonus CD. LOL. Love the wry humour, Barney.

Bizarre, isn't it. Alas, the wry humour isn't mine but Universal's. I believe there is an employee (hunchbacked, wearing a hat with many tails, each ending with a bell) whose job is to find such little jokes, and let us dig for them. Why not call it a one-CD set with 64 bonus CDs? Makes as much sense.

I can see the CD store salesman now ... (of course there are no more CD stores, but anyway) ... this Vienna set comes with one bonus CD, but this Concertgebouw set comes with two. In that case, says the customer, I want the Concertgebouw set.
