Conductor Dies on Stage

Post by maestrob » Sun Feb 01, 2015 12:05 pm

GENEVA — The Israeli conductor Israel Yinon collapsed during a youth concert at a Swiss university on Thursday evening and died, a member of the university staff reported.

Mr. Yinon, 59, was conducting the Junge Philharmonie Zentralschweiz orchestra in a performance of “An Alpine Symphony” by Richard Strauss as part of a music festival at Lucerne University of Applied Arts and Sciences when he collapsed, Simone Bush, a member of the university’s design, art and music faculty said.

He was taken to hospital but was reported to have died, Ms. Bush said. The cause of death was not known.

Mr. Yinon, who was born and studied music in Israel, had performed widely as a guest conductor with international orchestras, specializing in reviving works of forgotten German composers who were forbidden under Hitler. For his first CD he released the first recording of the symphonic works of the Czech composer Viktor Ullmann, who died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1944.

I visited Auschwitz-Birkenau ... terribly evil place. So sorry to hear this young conductor passed this way.

That's quite a discography of mostly unknown works with very few alternate recordings available of any of this material. Israel Yinon was highly dedicated to his work in bringing this music to listeners. He is to be praised for that.

Schulhoff is pretty well recorded: 18 recordings of his concerto for piano and small orchestra no.2, 11 recordings of the Double Concerto for flute, piano, 2 horns and string orchestra, and more!

Albrecht recorded some of his orchestral works on Orfeo and CPO;
Valek did his symphonies on Supraphon;
Oliver v. Dohnanyi produced several Schulhoff works for Arte Nova;
James Conlon recorded some for Capriccio
Even Marriner did a Schulhoff work for Chandos!

BTW, Schulhoff, who died in a concentration camp in 1942, was not arrested, like his father, for being Jewish; he was arrested because he was a communist. A soldier for Austria who saw action on the Russian front during World War I, he became rebellious during the twenties (jazz music, dadaist, socialist) and was planning to escape to the Soviet Union before the German invasion of the USSR.

Thank you for putting me straight regarding available recordings. I should have looked but didn't realize so much was available.

Those Alpine slopes can prove treacherous.

By the way, I have quite a few of the recordings listed above. And other interesting things. I've long collected music associated with victims of the Holocaust and the so-called "Degenerate" (Entartete) music. My collection includes the KZ Musik set of "Concentration Camp" music, a 24 volume collection of many lesser known pieces, not always well played or recorded, but precious nonetheless.

Where does one look to find out what has been recorded? Years ago I used to rely on the Gramophone Catalogue; I don't know whether that is even produced any more, and certainly I haven't bought one for 20 years. Is there an online authority?

I don't know that there's any good single destination. Discography research typically leads to specialized websites. In this instance, pertaining to works composed by Jewish composers threatened by Nazi Germany, I rely on Claude Torres, a French Jewish discographer who has not only compiled but carefully updated information, between 1999 and 2015, on a great many artistic victims of the Holocaust and several composers in exile too. This is his Schulhoff page:
