New Hungerford CD Album

Post by Donald Isler » Wed Nov 11, 2015 11:32 pm

KASP 57761, just released today by KASP Records (www.kasprecords.com), is a 2 CD album of the last recital played by the great Australian pianist, Bruce Hungerford (1922-1977), a month and a half before his tragic death in an auto accident, just as he was finally starting to receive the recognition he deserved. With music by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Bach/Hess it is available from me, and will soon be available via the KASP website.

Looking at the link, I'd say this is not the CD Donald is talking about. However, being a live Hungerford recital of Beethoven you've scored a really excellent recording I'd imagine.

I'm going to get both when the latest one is in CDBaby's catalogue

Holden is right. The new disc is not yet available on CD Baby because I just received the discs. The other one is the 1965 all-Beethoven recital in Bayreuth. The new one was recorded by the CBC in Calgary in 1976. Hope to have it set up so people can purchase the new album via CD Baby within a week, or two, at the most. Thanks to both of you for your interest in these discs!

Hi, Donald. Both Hungerford discs are of great interest to me as well! BUT, I don't know how to use CDBaby. Could you point me in the right direction, or perhaps PM me your address so I can send you a check for both? Many thanks......

Beautiful recording which spoke directly to my heart. I can't praise it enough. It arrived
yesterday (Monday in Australia) and we have listened to the Beethoven twice.

It is a great pity that Bruce Hungerford is unknown in Australia. In his youth only English
performers were of any importance. I well remember when the Governor General, an English
aristocrat, ordered the Sydney Symphony Orchestra to replace an Australian soloist with
an English one for the sake of "excellence". The replaced artist, I can't remember who replaced her.
was the Australian pianist Eileen Joyce. We have progressed since!!!!

I congratulate Donald for this wonderful recording and the joy it brought to me.

Regards,
Agnes.

Just ordered this CD plus the all Beethoven recital. I have the Hungerford Vanguard PS and am interested to see what difference a live venue makes to Bruce Hungerford's playing of these sonatas.

Like Agnes, I don't know anyone here who has heard of Bruce Hungerford which is a great pity.

Agnes, how long did it take for your order to arrive? I fly overseas on the 15th and hope it's here before then.

--------

I received my copy on Monday. Donald very kindly sent it to us. We have been friends with
Donald and his family since the 1980s when we lived in America. We met when Kathryn, our daughter, won the Hungerford Award at a New York piano competition.

A Bruce Hungerford recording has been performed once on the ABC due to the efforts of Mr. Terry Calhoun who used to be the ABC's New York manager. Kathryn will do her utmost to bring the ABC's attention to
this excellent recording.

I hope you will get the recording soon, Holden, you will really enjoy it.

Regards,
Agnes.

Just received the recital album, and the all-Beethoven set, and have listened carefully, Don. What a masterful pianist. His Mozart was sublime, the Schubert very individual, and the Beethoven certainly energetic. What impressed me most was Hungerford's attention to detail without being mannered in any way. He definitely deserves to be better known, no question.

The sound quality on these releases is excellent in both cases.

Thank you for making these fine albums available for us to enjoy. Please keep us informed of future releases.

Bruce Hungerford, and the new KASP Records CD of his last recital will get some significant air time this week. These programs can be heard online, so that one can listen to them anywhere in the world.

First, a movement of a Beethoven Sonata will be heard on David Dubal's WWFM program The Piano Matters (www.wwfm.org). This program will be broadcast this Wednesday evening at 10 (New York time), and the following Sunday at 12 noon (also New York time).

Next Sunday evening (the 13th) Bruce, and probably several of his recordings, will be the subject of Gary Lemco's program, The Music Treasury, on KZSU 90.1 FM (www.kzsulive.stanford.edu). It will be on the air from 7 - 9 PM, California time, which means 9 - 11 PM Central time, and 10 PM to midnight, New York time. This program will probably include the added attraction (well, hopefully not a detraction!) of an interview with me.

The March/April 2016 issue of the American Record Guide includes a review of the new KASP Records CD album of Bruce Hungerford's last recital, and says "Any Hungerford recital was an historic event. His recorded legacy may have been small, but it is significant to all who value the art of fine pianism. This recital will be treasured, not only by music lovers familiar with Hungerford, but by a new generation eager to explore and discover.....Cause for celebration - purchase with confidence."

My first order from CDbaby didn't arrive and they accepted this and sent another which I've now got. The all LvB recital is great and while one hears some differences to his Vanguard recordings his approach remains essentially the same. What I like is that he doesn't sound like any other pianist and has some very refreshing ideas as to how Beethoven should sound. It's also interesting to listen to two versions (the other on the last recital disc) of a sonata some consider his signature piece - Op 111.

On the last recital disc what fascinated me the most was the Mozart. Just so different from the usual dainty, prettified approach often taken.

Finally, the notes supplied by Donald are excellent and add significantly to what is already known about Bruce Hungerford. You can sense the personal touch, the fact that Donald knew him, in what he's written.
