Thoughts on the music of Nino Rota (1911-1979)
I have a friend who is "sold" on Rota's music. Myself, I have all his piano concertos, some chamber music, and a symphonic work or two. How do you think Rota lines up with other composers of the twentieth century? Off the top of my head, I can't recall anything particularly outstanding that has stuck with me regarding his music.

I heard one of the piano concertos once on the radio without knowing what it was, and wondering if there were somehow a Rachmaninoff concerto I hadn't heard. On the other hand, I enjoyed his opera "The Italian Straw Hat," which the Juilliard School performed years ago. I've heard some of his soundtrack music when watching Fellini's movies, and it was certainly appropriate. But I don't think of him as lining up with the important 20th century composers.

Enjoyed his soundtrack to Death on the Nile, which offhand is the only Rota I can recall having definitely heard.

His film music is what will be remembered before his fine concert music in the future. He was one of the titans of the cinema. Just listen to his score for 'La Strada' or 'The Godfather' and you will hear his greatness.
