I listened to the entire performance. The St. John Passion has a special place in my life for reasons I have posted (maybe long ago) but will not go into now.

One of the tests of a great performance is whether the tenor can manage the most difficult aria in all of Bach, Erwäge, wie sein blutgefärbter Rücken, which is paired as if it were a recitative with the also unique bass arioso Betrachte, meine Seel'. It is done well in this performance. The minor nod toward acting does not bother me.

The St. John Passion was premiered at the "second" church in Leipzig, the Nicolaikirche. It was only when I visited the city while living in Germany that I discovered that it is not architecturally secondary to the Gothic Thomaskirche. It is in fact a large and splendid church of the high Baroque, a fitting site for such a premiere.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
