Having Heard The Two Symphonies Of Kalinnikov ...
... repeatedly played by the Weasels, I'm afraid I find them little better than POSREDSTVENNYY=MEDIOCRE. I suspect that VK gets all that attention simply because he is Russian, and the Mustelids harbor the absurd delusion that all Russian composers are worthy compatriots and colleagues of Glinka, Chaykovsky, the Five, Scriabin, Stravinsky, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich. Myaskovsky wrote 27 really outstanding symphonies, and all that the Skunks play of him is his Violin Concerto!

Re: Having Heard The Two Symphonies Of Kalinnikov ...
Kalinnikov's 1st symphony was "discovered" by American orchestras and audiences long ago - the New York Philharmonic has been playing it since 1915 - though it has somewhat fallen out of favor since the 1940s. I heard it occasionally in the 1950s on what was then called "good music radio," now a dying species. (The 2nd symphony has been far less popular over here.) Russian symphonic literature of the Romantic era is sparse aside from Tchaikovsky and Borodin, but audiences like it a lot - that's no delusion. So secondary composers like Glazunov, Kalinnikov, and Taneyev get an occasional hearing in the west, more on records than in live concerts apart from those conducted by Neeme Järvi.
If your radio station plays music you personally don't think much of, that gives you a break to go do something else.

Nope, he gets attention because they are both interesting works.dulcinea wrote:... repeatedly played by the Weasels, I'm afraid I find them little better than POSREDSTVENNYY=MEDIOCRE. For some reason, these two symphonies (of Kalinnikov) rank among the first symphonies I had opportunity to hear many years ago. The two Melodiya Angel LPs with Kondrashin/Moscow in No. 1 and Svetlanov/U.S.S.R. SO in No. 2 (both covers feature horses! -- Is that why I bought the albums?) have been in my collection since ... it seems forever. I always assumed everybody knew these pieces. There is certainly some lovely music here.

For me better late than never-never heard of the composer or heard the symphonies but now I've listened to both about 3 times-right up my alley! Regards, LenSONNET CLV wrote: I always assumed everybody knew these pieces. There is certainly some lovely music here.

The Kalinnikov Symphony No.1 was one of my first loves in classical music in the 1950's. Here is a link to a wonderful thread in 2009 concerning this charming and luscious symphony:

Mel I took a look at the thread-have to completely agree with Febnyc and Chalkie-I like both symphonies with the 1st being my favorite-to think 3 or 4 weeks ago I hadn't heard of either Kalinnikov and those 2 works!
