Ginastera's "Bomarzo"--Finally!!

Finally, we are going to get an official reissue of Alberto Ginastera's sensational opera "Bomarzo" on Sony (88985350882), available in England in August. This was recorded in Washington at the premiere and was around on LP, but there had never been a legitimate CD reissue. I shall definitely get it, whether it is available in the United States or not (it is about $15.00 from MDT in England plus about $3.00 for shipping). This is a no-brainer for Ginastera fans.

PS I see this "The opera had its world premiere at the Opera Society of Washington, Washington D.C., on 19 May 1967.[1] The same production was first given at New York City Opera on 14 March 1968." That was before I got into opera.

Thanks for the alert. I already have a digitized version of the CBS LP set, but I ordered this Sony CD this morning came to about $16.50 shipped

Glimmerglass might be a good venue for this opera.
In the meantime, I ran into this video representation of Bomarzo, and I'm not sure if the action in the video corresponds exactly with what's called for in the libretto, but they're singing the words, and the subtitles are in Italian.

Ginastera wrote at least one additional opera, "Don Rodrigo." Excerpts (with Placido Domingo singing(!)) were recently issued on a Warner Classics recording conducted by the Uruguayan conductor Gisele Ben-Dor, who is something of a Ginastera specialist. Maybe she can record the entire opera for Naxos; she had previously recorded some Ginastera for that label.

I had a video of that (probably made illicitly) at the ENO way back. Neither picture nor sound were very good but it was during his 12-tone excusions, if I remember rightly. It isn't something I'd buy; simply because it would only get a couple of listens what with everything else. If one comes my way I might or if it appears afresh on vinyl.

For various reasons (fairly clear to me) I've "gone off" 12-tone music of late. One such is that by its very nature it becomes "internationalised" - basics of its formulation matter not a jot whether it's composed in Vienna or Mexico or Iceland, etc. It is denatured. That's fine for those who like the sound of it.... I enjoyed it for many a year (and particularly hybrid works that either touch upon straight chromaticism or even diatonic here and there. The classic example is Berg... but similar happens in Birtwistle and Lutyens and others. As I tend to reach into cultures with music 12-tone works in a given culture are of marginal interest. It can still evoke my interest though and as I said, if I can get a vinyl copy I will - great if it became available in multi-media which would prompt me to set vinyl aside.

Indeed - lo and behold I have located a copy.... I'll see about that tomorrow.
