Those of you who follow my posts know of my interest in offbeat (all right, whacko!) 20th- and 21st-century repertoire. Well, here we go again. Supraphon has just announced a complete set (4 CDs) of the symphonies of Miloslav Kabeláč. Kabeláč was an important Czech composer who ran into serious problems under both the Nazis and the Communists (he refused to divorce his Jewish wife and his music was banned when the Germans occupied Czechoslovakia, his music was again seriously censored under the Communists, and he was unable to travel to the West for the premiere of his Eighth Symphony in Strasbourg, France). There have been recordings of a few of his symphonies (the Fifth and the Eighth), but no complete set. I shall definitely grab this.
Based on your recommendation, I have been listening to Kabelac's gripping 3rd symphony, for brass and organ. His style is very intense and unrelenting, but makes a powerful statement.
