Jed Distler Program on Bruce Hungerford

Post by Donald Isler » Tue Jan 24, 2017 11:27 am

This evening (Tuesday) at 10 PM, New York time, pianist, composer and critic (for Gramophone Magazine, among other publications) Jed Distler will devote his weekly radio program, Between the Keys, to Bruce Hungerford, whose career was cut short when he died in an auto accident (caused by a drunk driver) 40 years ago this week. (As a student of Hungerford) I will be Jed's guest, as we listen to Hungerford's performances of music by Beethoven, Chopin, Wagner and Bach, and talk about him. The program can be heard online at www.wwfm.org

Except that WWFM is playing a different edition of Jed's program, though the website shows that the Hungerford show is on!

Donald, I stayed up on purpose to listen to this and then fell asleep in my chair. By the time I woke up, your segment was over. So sorry. For years I've wondered what it must have meant to you to lose such a teacher in such a manner at so young an age. You must have cried your eyes out for days. Ironically, were it not for you and your late father, I would never have heard of Hungerford, that's how early his career was cut short. At least you introduced me to a very interesting radio station with great programming. I thought that such existed no more.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Sorry you fell asleep waiting for a program that wasn't even aired, JBuck! WWFM accidentally aired the previous week's program again on the 24th, but they will air the Hungerford program this coming Tuesday evening, the 31st, also at 10 PM, New York time on www.wwfm.org. It's a whole hour of Bruce's playing, and Jed and me talking about him. Hope you can stay awake, and hope they don't mess up at the station again!
