Yo-Yo Ma Premieres Salonen Cello Concerto

Post by Modernistfan » Thu Mar 02, 2017 11:26 am

Yo-Yo Ma is about to premiere Esa-Pekka Salonen's cello concerto. This will be a nice change from the Krossover Krap with which Yo-Yo Ma has been sullying his reputation. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that he will be able to record this work. For one thing, Salonen is signed to Deutsche Grammophon, while Yo-Yo Ma is a Sony artist. Sometimes record labels do allow artists to make a recording for another label in these circumstances, but the last time that Yo-Yo Ma did premiere a contemporary work, the Elliott Carter cello concerto, it was under Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony; at the time, Barenboim was signed to Warner Classics, and no recording was ever made. There have now been three commercial recordings of the Carter cello concerto (Fred Sherry, Johannes Moser, and Alisa Weilerstein), but Yo-Yo has never recorded the work.

The new Salonen concerto is bound to be a very attractive work, and someone's going to need to record it. I hope at least a video of the performance shows up on Youtube.
Black lives matter.
