I Think Someone Already Asked About ...

... what great musician(s) you would have liked to meet.
I would have liked to know Poulenc; his biography, his portraits, and certainly his music all suggest a very friendly approachable man with a very winning personality. :D :D :D :D :D :) :) :) :) :)

Yes, and I think it was you.

I strongly suspect that most great composers had personalities that would have overwhelmed me if they had deigned to say good morning to me in the first place. Then there is the only composer I was ever in the same room with who offered the possibility of meeting him. It was Aaron Copland. He along with several of the nameless-faceless was invited to take questions at the venerable Whig-Clio debating society at Princeton, and even though this was the initiative of another music major, the prepared questions were so bad that I was thoroughly embarrassed for my school's reputation. Not that I would have known any better what to say to him if had shaken his hand.

But if you wish to engage in the realm of fantasy, a composer it was not possible for us to meet (unless you think you might have charmed him at the age of nine), then I can go along with Poulenc. Happily, even. Not a bad choice. :)

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

I would love to have met Carlos Kleiber. Charles Barber, his correspondent, told me I would really have 'liked him more if you had met him'. Not only a phenomenal musician who was across a great many scores, but his literary interests, wonderful sense of humour, interesting history and peripatetic lifestyle; the fact that through Erich he knew Ernest Hemingway and Richard Strauss would make him even more interesting to me. But, finally, he was drop-dead gorgeous when young and still incredibly attractive when old. In short, the complete catastrophe for the dozens of women who adored him!!!!! :)

Here he is rehearsing "Der Rosenkavalier" in Vienna in 1994. Not good sound quality for his voice, unfortunately, though he obviously manages to make them all laugh. And I'm sure he didn't know he was being captured on film here:
