I think I`ll pass on this but thanks for the alert-Sellars usually means trouble-this review sure doesn`t make it enticing for me-just look at the photos. Len :(

Like you, I like traditional production but I'm going to watch anyway after listening to the audio only and liking it.

Some comments from listeners on another forum:

... they cut the recitatives and included other music like a movement from the C minor Mass and the Maurerische Trauermusik. Here is Der Spiegel's review (in German): http://www.spiegel.de/kultur/musik/salz ... 60102.html

Listening right now, and loving every minute of it. I can see that Currentzis (and Sellars) got rave reviews for the Salzburg premiere.

Me too, though it's a shame that (as is too often the case) the Tito simply can't sing the florid music in "Se all'impero". The musical additions and omissions seem silly, but I'm not going to complain too much, at least inasmuch as I don't think I've heard the "Laudamus te" from the C Minor Mass better conducted. I've not seen all of it yet, but his Mozart Requiem from the same festival seems superb (and if there are any gimmicks, I've not encountered them yet).

It’s even better if you watch it – video from medici TV (where it’s still available, evidently). “Parto” (stunningly sung – aside from missing trills – and played) is especially impressive, a real duet (the clarinetist is up on stage, “acting” with her), and the extraneous music is impressively integrated. I’m sure many will dismiss the whole thing as too gimmicky; if so, too bad for them.

What a low-calibre cast and conductor for Mozart at the Salzburg Festival, of all places. The only name singer is the bass Willard White, a superb Golaud at the Met (and, inevitably, Porgy elsewhere), but here he's in the nothing role of Publio. O Schmach, o Schande.

The Guardian article is reviewing another production at Glyndebourne! From what I can make out of the German text, and FWIW, Der Spiegel gives the Salzburg one with Sellars and Currentzis a pretty good review.

Conductor - Currentzis is an interesting young conductor in his mid forties who leads his own orchestra of mostly young players founded in 2004. He has recorded the three Da Ponte operas for Sony, Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and orchestral and choral works by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Rameau, Stravinsky and Shostakovich. He has conducted on film Purcell (The Indian Queen), Stravinsky (Persephone) and Tchaikovsky (Iolanta).

Cast - Mostly younger singers. Refreshing. As for "names", I doubt that Currentzis would want them, or they him, given his reputation as an iconoclast who demands many long rehearsals.

What I have watched of this opera so far is interesting. I don't know it well yet, though I have listened to the Bohm and Davis LP recordings at one time w/o getting much out of them:

Conductor - Teodor Currentzis https://www.opera-online.com/en/items/p ... ntzis-1972

Tito Vespasiano - Russell Thomas http://www.classicalmusicguide.com/post ... 10&t=47326

Vitellia - Golda Schultz https://www.opera-online.com/en/items/p ... da-schultz

Servilia - Christina Gansch https://www.opera-online.com/en/items/p ... ina-gansch

Sesto - Marianne Crebassa http://www.classicalmusicguide.com/post ... 10&t=47326

Annio - Jeanine De Bique https://www.opera-online.com/en/items/p ... e-de-bique

Publio - Sir Willard White https://www.opera-online.com/en/items/p ... white-1946

When my family saw two Mozart operas at the 1956 Salzburg Festival, a promising young conductor was in charge of "The Magic Flute": Georg Solti. But the cast was top-flight, mainly from the Vienna State Opera, and the orchestra was the Vienna Phiharmonic. As for "Figaro" the next night:

conductor: Karl Böhm
Figaro: Erich Kunz
Susanna: Irmgard Seefried
countess: Elisabeth Schwarzkopf
count: Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
Cherubino: Christa Ludwig
Bartolo: Oskar Czerwenka

The Salzburg Festival continued to offer talent at this level until Herbert von Karajan, its long-time director, retired and then died, and Gérard Mortier took over in 1989 with a completely different agenda. Nearly 30 years later the Festival's musical standards have not recovered, and maybe they never will.

Anxiety of musical influence. Christoph von Dohnanyi used to say: We give a great performance and George Szell gets all the credit.
