A Jonas Kaufmann recording is a most welcome release when vocal recordings are considered. This one is a beaut! An all-French recital, Kaufmann says, "The grand French opera repertoire is very close to my heart. This fascinating music reflects a unique period in European culture. I didn't want to choose only highlights for this album but also works and roles that have been key experiences for me, from Wilhelm Meister in Mignon ... my first major French role - to Werther with which I debuted at the Paris Opera."

For me, the first cut to hear was the famous duet from Bizet's The Pearl Fischers, with baritone Ludovic Tezier. Two excerpts Massenet's Manon are included with soprano Sonya Yoncheva. [An interesting side-note: you may be reminded of the voice of Maria Callas with Yoncheva!] All are with the superb Bavarian State Orchestra under Bertrand de Billy.

A must-have for opera fans. Five stars! *****

Lance....

Any release by Kaufmann is on my "must buy" list, as is this one. I've also recently acquired his Mahler "Das Lied von der Erde" disc, and will review that shortly.

Thanks for the tip!
