Arrived today (Sunday). Nice to get a package on a Sunday!

Trifonov has developed quite a following. His DGG CDs are all worth acquiring (some on Decca, Dux and Mariinsky as well) ... he's a fine pianist in the great Russian tradition and most assuredly has something to say.

Now comes Chopin's two piano concertos with orchestrations by pianist/conductor Mikhail Pletnev (in this world premiere recording). Evocations, indeed, from Schumann (Chopin from Carnival), a Nocturne by Barber, an Hommage to Chopin by Grieg, the famous La ci darem la Mano variations after Mozart, Tchaikovsky's Un poco di Chopin; a Rondo for Two Pianos in C (with Sergei Babayan, piano), and interesting set of Variations on a Theme by Chopin by Frederic Mompou. In the orchestral works, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra is led by Mikhail Pletnev.

Very nice set for sure.

When she started to play, Mr. Steinway came down and personally
rubbed his name off the piano. [Speaking about pianist &*$#@+#]

Chopin was not the greatest orchestrater in the world, but his efforts in the two piano concerti have never been questioned TMK until now. How do you find these revisions, Lance? The issue intrigues me.
