On Site Opera Ricky Ian Gordon's Morning Star

Post by lennygoran » Wed Oct 25, 2017 7:13 pm

We've been to the Eldridge Street Synagogue but not for an opera. OTOH we've had some nice On Site Opera experiences at some very unusual venues. Regards, Len

On Site Opera announces the NYC premiere of
Ricky Ian Gordon's Morning Star
in March 2018

Morning Star tells the moving story of an immigrant Jewish family in the early 20th-century struggling to find a better life on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Gordon's rich score takes listeners on a journey through love, joy, heartbreak, and loss. The production will be staged in the historic Eldridge Street Synagogue on the Lower East Side, among the pews where the characters from the opera would have sat. The production will also feature the world premiere of a newly-commissioned chamber edition of the opera, supervised by the composer, with new orchestrations by Tony Award-winning orchestrator Bruce Coughlin.

Performances:
March 21 & 22, 2018 at 7pm
March 25, 2018 at 12:00pm & 5pm

Museum at Eldridge Street
12 Eldridge Street
New York, NY 10002

All I can say is that with a name like Ricky Ian Gordan and a production in a synagogue, it had better be good.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Sounds like a serious work. It's odd that Gordon didn't do the commissioned reorchestration himself - that's common for a musical but rare for an opera - but from the Wikipedia article about him, he seems to be a very busy composer, and maybe didn't have the time.

Thanks very much for this-Sue has expressed a lot of interest in this-it's close to things in NYC we like-the tenement museum, katzs, chinatown, Rus and Daughters! Regards, Len :D
