Christian Ferras, violinist: new "Icon" set

Another musical tragedy when French violinist CHRISTIAN FERRAS (1933-1982) committed suicide after an up-and-down career. Wikipedia carries a full article on the man, who made a number of recordings for EMI, DGG, Decca, Telefunken, and whose work can also be found on a number of other labels, including Archipel, Arioso, Brilliant (licensed), Doremi, Melo, Music & Arts, Tahra, Audite, Orfeo and others. Ferras' problems seemed to be related to serious depression.

Now Warner has issued a 13-CD boxed set remastered from the original tapes. A desciption of what's included is listed on the photo of the back of the boxed set. Collaborators include Pierre Barbizet, Yehudi Menuhin, Paul Tortelier, the Parrenin Quartet, various orchestra led by Kletzki, Lombard, Ludwig, Prêtre, Sargent, Silvestri, Susskind, and Vandernoot. This, and the DGG set released a couple of years ago gives a marvelous account of a violinist who enjoyed, at least, a moderately fine career.

I didn't know he had died or how. What a pity. He was a favorite of Herbert von Karajan and recorded the standard violin concertos with him. Not particularly a favorite of mine, but RIP.
