Philip Glass Concert: Save the Date

My nephew has been invited to play French horn with the Pacific Symphony on Saturday, April 21, in an afternoon concert @ Carnegie Hall, including much music new to New Yorkers by Philip Glass. The Concerto #3 for Sitar & Orchestra by Ravi Shankar is played by Anoushka Shankar, Ravi's daughter, for those who are interested.

Sitar meets symphony orchestra when Philip Glass’s famous collaborations with Ravi Shankar are remembered. “Meetings Along the Edge” from Passages weaves Eastern themes with classic Glass motifs. On a grand scale, there’s the New York premiere of the complete version of The Passion of Ramakrishna, a quietly intense work of tremendous power honoring the Hindu holy man. Shankar’s daughter, Anoushka Shankar, is also center stage when she performs his Concerto No. 3 for Sitar and Orchestra with the Orange County–based Pacific Symphony, led by its music director of 28 seasons, Carl St.Clair.

Carl St. Clair has been with them for 28 years! He must have gone there right after his time with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra (Ithaca, New York based orchestra. St. Clair took that job in 1985 upon the retirement of the original conductor, Karel Husa).

Carl St. Clair has a good reputation for leading the Pacific Symphony in less well-known XXth Century repertoire, and has lots of recordings available with that ensemble. He also managed to squeeze in Wagner's Ring on DVD:

Frankly, I cannot mind anyone whose relatives have a serious job. I mean look at my own situation, which depended on the fact that the military employs otherwise unemployable musicians of very serious talent, even if they don't know the difference between Beethoven and Roll Over Beethoven. But Philip Glass? You have to be kidding. I don't care if it's Carnegie Hall or Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, a real place near the capital of New York.

Just a quick observation......

My nephew Mike's concert with the Pacific Symphony featuring music by Philip Glass and Ravi Shankar, led by Carl St. Clair, is sold out tonight in Carnegie's Stern Auditorium. Congratulations to all!

We had dinner last night and he's looking forward to auditioning for a permanent position with the orchestra, even though he's been playing steadily with them for 3 years. Break a leg!
