Farinelli and the King

Post by lennygoran » Thu Jan 11, 2018 10:48 pm

This play we saw tonight on broadway had so much to do with opera I thought I would discuss it here-the play is very imaginative and countertenor lestyn Davies sang beautifully-there were a lot of opera humorous remarks-I have to admit I couldn`t distinquish Handel's arias from those of Porpora--all in all a very enjoyable experience! There is a movie Farinelli that you should probably watch. The voicing was done by combining a countertenor with a female alto, but beware, for it has a very disturbing scene that shows or at least strongly implies the actual castration. Apparently this guy, who spent his life seeking music on the level of Handel to perform, actually originated the lead role in Rinaldo. I cannot address the historical accuracy of the apparent collapse of Handel himself in the following scene.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
