Brad Mehldau: After Bach

Post by IcedNote » Mon Mar 12, 2018 10:07 am

So the superb jazz pianist Brad Mehldau just released a new solo album, "After Bach." The album comprises the pianist/composer's recordings of four preludes and one fugue from J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, each followed by an “After Bach” piece written by Mehldau and inspired by its WTC mate. And boy, does it work! Of course, the line between contemporary jazz and contemporary classical music is a thin one in most cases...and damn near invisible here.

The full album is on all the streaming services, and select tracks can be found on YouTube.

I just ordered the CD. Thanks, -G! This is right up my alley, as I've long been a fan of Brad Mehldau. As Dave Brubeck noted throughout his career, there is no clear dividing line between good jazz and classical music. One of my favorite albums (long OOP) is Bob James's take on Scarlatti: sheer joy!

Very inventive and beautifully played, Thanks for brought it to our attention.
I remain a devout fan of the Jacques Loussier Trio in this genre and revisit his CDs on a regular basis.
