As someone who produced a vocal competition in NYC in Carnegie Hall for 10 years, I applaud Paul Lewis's efforts to rethink the very idea of competitions. This is a format that needs rethinking, to eliminate the emotional blow of losing and being tossed out on your ear. Many fine musicians avoid entering competitions because they are not up to the stress of competing (Imagine fragile Horowitz, Lili Pons or Franco Corelli and you'll understand my meaning.).
