And speaking of NY State's summer operas

Post by jbuck919 » Thu Apr 19, 2018 9:25 am

Glimmerglass is putting on The Cunning Little Vixen, and that's at least a possibility. Caramoor is doing Handel's Atalanta. Bard College is putting on Anton Rubinstein's Demon, about which I know nothing but which is an intriguing possibility. That's probably the one my friend Ted will attend, but we can never go together because he meets a cousin for dinner on the opera day. Instead we'll have lunch in Albany. (This may be the last time I see Ted, because he is retiring at the end of this school year and, having saved every penny he's ever earned, is thinking of moving to Singapore or some such place.)

Maybe the most interesting program is being presented by the Seagle Colony. which is going Giulio Cesare, Candide, and The Great Gatsby. Perhaps John F actually saw the last, which was composed for James Levine's 25th anniversary with the Met Opera, and can tell us what he thought.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

We'll be seeing The Demon Fri Aug 3. We saw the Great Gatsby-it was a long time ago and while I don't think it was great I'm glad I saw it once at least. Regards, Len
