I bet Bruckner´s fifth became an experience when Herbert Blomstedt conducted it. Blomstedt is a marvelous Brucknerian. He returns regularly to Stockholm where he often conducts just Bruckner. Fortunately these concerts are broadcast. I´ve heard that he will record a Bruckner-cycle. I do hope he doesn´t delay that project as he is over 90! Many of the Bruckner-experts like Wand, Jochum, Karajan are gone, but we have Blomstedt!

Kjell Nilsson. :D

Ah, yes, but there's still Barenboim. I recommend his DVD series of the mature symphonies with the Staatskappelle Berlin. Truly outstanding, committed playing of the highest order.

My favorite Bruckners are the Klemperer 4, 5, 6, 7, & 9, but the 8th is horrible. I have another favorite of the Fifth by Furtwangler and the Berlin Philharmonic--a live performance from Sunday, 25 OCT 1942, the date of my birth!
Don't drink and drive. You might spill it.--J. Eugene Baker, aka my late father
"We're not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term."--Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S. Carolina.
"Racism is America's Original Sin."--Francis Cardinal George, former Roman Catholic Archbishop of Chicago.

Blomstedt has already recorded a Bruckner cycle with his former orchestra, the Gewandhaus, but I can't recall the label . Haven't heard it but would definitely like to . He has also recorded the 6th for Decca with the San Fransisco symphony , and a couple of others with the Staatskapelle, Dresden , I believe on Denon .
