Piano music of Henry Cowell

Post by Rach3 » Tue Jun 26, 2018 8:43 am

Decided to listen to some piano music of Henry Cowell, with whom Lou Harrison studied, after enjoying Harrison’s PC discussed earlier here:

Three Irish Legends ( 1922 ), Steffen Schleriermacher , pianist . I particularly like “ Hero Sun” , second of the three . There are cd’s of the Legends , other than the YT cd , at Amazon-US :

Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra (1928) -- Stefan Litwin, pianoforte -- Radio Symphony Orchestra Saarbrücken diretta da Michael Stern -- I. Polyharmony II. Tone Cluster III. Counter Rhythm , 16 minutes total. A German WWE cd OP at Amazon, but there is a cd there with pianist Jeremy Denk, MTT/SanFranciscoSym. at Amazon - US.

Cowell's most famous piano piece, and maybe his most famous period, is doubtless "The Banshee" (1925). I got it on a Folkways recording, of all things, played and announced by the composer:

Cowell recorded an LP's worth of his piano music in the 1950s. Well worth having if you can find it.
