Decca's Claudio Arrau Edition

Post by Lance » Tue Jul 03, 2018 11:01 am

Just curious. I wonder how many of our members acquired the big Arrau Edition from Decca?

Sorry, Lance, looks like nobody sprang for this one. I'm saving my big-box cash for the Szell box, due out on August 10th. May also buy the DeLarrocha set as well, as a birthday present for my lovely spouse!

Happy Independence Day to you and yours!

I got it, but with my reviewer's hat on, so I didn't have to pay. I probably wouldn't have, as I already had a good proportion of the material. And I have always found Arrau among the most stately and magisterial of pianists, but not the most intimate. But I think he plays with utter integrity, and any interpretation he offers is serious and worth consideration.

I just ordered this from Amazon.co.uk, as the price has dropped to £83.32. I was planning to give it a miss, but for that price it is hard to beat. (That's about $108, and their shipping is very cheap).
By the way, the 90 disk Yehudi Menuhin set is under $40...crazy.

This is no doubt due to when these products are first released, they are quickly snapped up. The remainder then moves slowly and prices frequently come down until the sets are basically gone ... then, of course, the price goes back up to sometimes extraordinary asking prices. Law of supply and demand. I have both the Arrau and Menuhin sets. They are valuable editions to anyone's library. Then, too, many of the younger folks are not fully aware of the great artists, and many are downloading. The CD market seems to be changing exponentially.
