Yes, I'm back ...

Post by Lance » Sun Jul 29, 2018 1:19 pm

About 3,000+ miles of travel by car to Florida, Georgia, a fabulous chamber music festival [Highlands Cashiers] in Cashiers, North Carolina, back to Georgia. Next stop the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont. Am I getting too old for all this extensive travel? Sometimes I think so though I know age is only a number. And yes, I have missed all of you!

Welcome back, Lance, but I'm probably about your age and I'm about to take off for the Organ Historical Society Convention which is only as far away as Rochester. I've been to many of these, but they are exhausting and this may be the last one I have in me.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Well, it's good to be back. Have some incredible CDs awaiting my hearing, always nice in itself. And don't cut yourself short ... you may be making these trips to Rochester many more times yet!

It happens in a different city every year. The point was that all I have to do to get to Rochester is (a) drive or (b) what I'm really doing, which is to drive only as far as Renssalear and take Amtrak. (Apologies to those who don't know the New York geography.) Sounds easy, doesn't it? But it goes on for five days and each day is spent traveling on a bus from one organ site (usually but not always a church) to another with breaks only for meals. Sometimes the bus rides last for hours. (Think Philadelphia to Atlantic City or Saratoga to Cooperstown.) Fortunately I do this with a friend who has the harder job, since he must now travel from Florida. There are also many CD opportunities, though I could just order them from the OHS catalog and I'm already backed up on organ CDs.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
