One of the world’s leading orchestras fired its chief conductor on Thursday after he was accused of sexual misconduct: The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam announced that it had terminated the Italian maestro Daniele Gatti “with immediate effect.”

Mr. Gatti is the latest in a series of major conductors forced out after accusations of sexual misconduct or abuse, following the Metropolitan Opera’s dismissal of its music director emeritus, James Levine, and several major orchestras severing their ties with the Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit. Mr. Gatti took the helm of the Concertgebouw in 2016 after leading the Orchestre National de France.

The allegations against Mr. Gatti surfaced on July 26, when the Washington Post reported that two sopranos who had worked with him said that he had tried to push himself onto them.

One, Alicia Berneche, told the paper that Mr. Gatti offered her a coaching session on her first day on a program for young artists at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 1996, when she was 24, but that once in his dressing room she found “his hands on my rear end, and his tongue down my throat.”

The other, Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet, told The Post that Mr. Gatti had tried something similar with her four years later when she was singing in Wagner’s “The Flying Dutchman” in Bologna, Italy. After she pushed him off, she said, the company never rehired her.

The Concertgebouw Orchestra said in a statement that “since the publication of the article in The Washington Post, a number of female colleagues of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra reported experiences with Gatti, which are inappropriate considering his position as chief conductor” and added that “this has irreparably damaged the relationship of trust between the orchestra and the chief conductor.”

Mr. Gatti was considered a rising star. In 2013 he conducted a new production of Wagner’s “Parsifal” at the Metropolitan Opera, starring the tenor Jonas Kaufmann, from memory. In his review in The New York Times, Anthony Tommasini said that Mr. Gatti drew diaphanous, if sometimes slow playing from the orchestra, writing that “at his best he was inspired, and his immersion in the piece is palpable.”

The Post reported that Mr. Gatti had issued an apology “to all the women I have met in my entire life” after its article detailing the allegations ran.

“To all the women I have met in my entire life, especially those who believe I did not treat them with the utmost respect and dignity they certainly deserve, I sincerely apologize from the bottom of my heart,” he told the paper.

It said that he added: “Today and moving forward, I plan to focus much more on my behaviors and actions with all women. This includes women both young and old, to be sure no woman ever feels uncomfortable ever again, especially women that I work with in my profession in classical music. I am truly sorry.”

A late apology is better than none, but of course, it is now too late for Gatti to resume a career with much significance.

Good riddance! This kind of publicity only makes life worse for those of us who wouldn't even dream of treating a woman like that. Gatti has never figured highly in my universe, and now even less.

William Preucil forced to resign from the Cleveland Institute of Music

Cleveland Scene wrote:Violinist William Preucil Resigns from Cleveland Institute of Music Amid Allegations of Assault

Following a story from last week regarding allegations of misconduct within the Cleveland orchestral community, the Cleveland Institute of Music's Distinguished Professor of Violin, and alleged sexual abuser, William Preucil, announced his resignation from the position Saturday.

Despite Scene's acknowledgement of Preucil's questionable behavior back in 2007, the new national attention brought to his indiscretions by The Washington Post made the allegations that the renowned violinist sexually assaulted a student when he was a teacher at Miami's New World Symphony in 1998 harder to ignore.

CIM president and CEO Paul W. Hogle released a statement saying the school was "deeply troubled" by the allegations but would not comment on the specific case. Hogle said that the school "has zero tolerance for behavior that puts our students at risk.""The women's accounts, which were reported to have occurred 10 and 20 years ago, were professionally researched, excruciatingly detailed, independently corroborated and painful to read,” Hogle wrote. “As a community of classical musicians, students, faculty and staff we can do better."

As of Friday, the Cleveland Orchestra also suspended the concertmaster pending an independent investigation. Preucil was also the highest paid musician with the Cleveland Orchestra, earning $579,030 according to their latest IRS Form 990 filing in 2016.
The Preucil matter is still pending with the Cleveland Orchestra which last week issued a lawyerly statement saying that they had been unaware of the WAPO allegations about Preucil. The statement, while technically accurate, did not mention there had been other allegations made and published in Cleveland Scene Magazine in 2007 that the CleveO had to have been aware of. That article was pretty much ignored by the national media: https://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/so ... id=1497679

The Washington Post is really on a rampage about this, aren't they? Which music director of an important orchestra or opera house will they strike next? Sheesh!

Hopefully, they will strike every single 'important orchestra or opera house' where the powerful believe they are entitled to harass, abuse, or assault others with impunity.

WAPO aims to report the truth regardless of a public figure's or an institution's alleged 'importance'. And because of its prestige, when and if WAPO gets the story right, things happen quickly. The Gatti firing within days shows that, though now Gatti appears to be contemplating deploying the Levine Gambit: file a lawsuit.

The Preucil matter now appears to be another instance of attendant consequences whenever the investigative report has merit. Preucil's alleged misconduct was reported 11 years ago in a local journal. I recall reading the report. But nothing much happened till the WAPO revived and added to the allegations with solid reporting that got national attention. On July 31, Preucil was forced to resign his teaching position at the Cleveland Institute of Music; earlier, and within a few days of the WAPO story, he was suspended by the Cleveland Orchestra while they investigate.

More power to WAPO. So far they appear not to have abused it.

I'm not saying that anybody should be excused for misconduct. But all these me-too disclosures are damaging to the artistic work of the organizations involved and no doubt bring discredit to the profession as a whole, at a time when classical music needs all the help it can get. As with the Roman Catholic sex scandals, facts are facts and have to be faced.

Classical music needs 'all the help it can get', but in my opinion that help should not include questioning the disclosure of the institutional shortcomings that have allowed the powerless to be victimized.

The WAPO investigative reports are no more responsible for discrediting classical music institutions than were the Boston Globe revelations about clergy misconduct for undermining the moral authority of the Roman Catholic Church. Maestro Levine and Cardinal Law then, and Conductor Daniele Gatti and Cardinal McCarrick https://www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/ ... undraiser/ now, together with the very institutions that looked the other way in the face of their alleged abuses, accomplished that all by their lonesome.
