2018 Leeds Piano Competition

Post by Rach3 » Fri Sep 14, 2018 3:38 pm

You may ( or may not ) wish to hear the Finals of the 2018 Leeds Piano Competition. Interesting format in that each Finalist proposes 2 concertos, the jury picks the one they wish to hear, on rather short notice to the pianist , I believe.

I’ve heard Friday. No Federico Colli (2012 winner ) so far.

Friday 14 September:
Aljoša Jurinić

Mario Häring
Beethoven – Concerto No. 1 in C major Op. 15

Saturday 15 September
Xinyuan Wang
Schumann – Piano Concerto in A minor Op.54
Eric Lu
Beethoven – Concerto No.4 in G major Op.58

Thanks,Allen.

I heard only the concerto round of the 5 Finalists, with the exception of Lu, whose solo "recital" ( 3rd and 4th movs. of Chopin's "Funeral March" Sonata) I also heard. Based on the concertos alone, he would have been my " winner " choice. His LvB PC # 4 is worth hearing ; at age 20 !! He was the 4th place at the most recent Chopin Competition in Warsaw ( 2015 ) , age age 17 !!

The Saturday concerto performances of Lu, and the 2nd Place Wang ( whose Schumann PC I did not care for, thought Jurinic's Friday Mozart K.491 " better" ):
