Grieg's Cello Sonata

Post by Rach3 » Thu Sep 20, 2018 10:30 am

While I am familiar with his Violin Sonata # 3 and Piano Sonata, this may have been my first hearing of his passionate Cello Sonata, to which I will return for re-hearings:

Indeed, both lovely works by Grieg. His piano sonata is a fabulous piece, and I love his Violin Sonata #3 of all three of the violin sonatas.

Re-heard ; good deal at Amazon on the Naxos cd pairing the Cello Sonata and Piano Sonata ( Idiscovered I did not have a recording of the piano ) with pianist Havard Gimse ,whose playing I respect from other recordings , cellist Oystein Birkeland not known to me but I'll trust Gimse's choice of partner.

There have been some superb recordings of the cello sonata:

Sony: Leonard Rose, Leonid Hambro
DGG: Ludwig Hoelscher, Hans Richter-Hauser
RCA: Stever Isserlis, Steven Hough; another on Hyperion
BBC Legends: Mstislav Rostropovich, Benjamin Britten [live]
Hanssler-Profil: David Geringas, Ian Fountain
Melos: Ludwig Hoelscher, Michael Raucheisen [live]
Music & Arts: Mstislav Rostropovich, Sviatoslav Richter [live]
West Hills Archive: Gregor Piatigorsky, Ralph Berkowitz
Virgin: Truls Mork, Jean-Yves Thibaudet

I think by now I have quite enough for one man! (And yes, have the Naxos one as well. Also a very fine recording.)

Naxos cd arrived. I have no other recordings to compare , but this certainly seems a very fine one. Thanks, too, Lance for your info about the Naxos cd and others.

Per the Naxos liner notes , Grieg, in one of his last public appearances, played the Cello Sonatain 1906 with then 30-year old Pablo Casals. To have been in that audience !
