Oborin is best known as David Oistrakh's partner in 1950s Soviet recordings, but he was no mere accompanist but a major pianist in his own right. A pupil of the famous teacher Konstantin Igumnov, he won the first Warsaw International Chopin Piano Competition in 1927. Khatchaturian dedicated his piano concerto to Igumnov, and I have an impressive Melodiya recording with him of Rach3, not the CMG member but the concerto. :)

A couple more Oborin worth hearing, I think, despite the sound:

A wonderful Russian pianist, Lev Oborin. As JohnF has noted, the preponderance of his recordings are with violinist David Oistrakh and cellist Sviatoslav Knushevitsky. But there have been a number of CDs issued of him as a solo pianist or with orchestra.

THE CDs
* RCA 10-CD set 33230 "The Russian Piano School" with many noted pianists therein
* Appian 5668 - Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Tchaikovsky solo pieces
* Aquarius 386 - "A Concert in Memory of Konstantin Igumnov" (his teacher, with many
_____other artists included therein.
* Dante 159 - Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos 2 (w/Gauk), and 3 (w/Ivanov) [r.1947/1949]
* Multisonic 310265 - Schumann: Symphonic Etudes
* Multisonic 310353 - Rimsky-Korsakov Piano Concerto (w/Anosov); Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #2 (w/Kerer) and Prokofiev Piano Concerto #1 (/Kondrashin)
* DGG 479 5404 "Great Chopin Players, Winners of the International Chopin Competition,
_____(1927-2010) - 3 pieces originally recorded by Melodiya and Polskie Nagrania (11 CDs with many pianists included therein)

THE LPs
*Monitor MCS-2079 - Khachaturian Piano Concerto (w/composer conducting)
Melodiya 36095/96 "Art of Oborin" Vol. 1 - Mozart Piano Concerto#17; Rachmaninoff
_____Piano Concerto #2 (w/A. Gauk)
* Melodiya 36097/98 "Art of Oborin" Vol. 2 - Beethoven Piano Sonata #31;
_____Chopin Sonata #3
* Melodiya 36099/100 "Art of Oborin" Vol. 3 - Chopin Program
* Melodiya 36101/102 "Art of Oborin" Vol. 4 - Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Scriabin

This all gives you an idea of what is — or has been available — on LP and CD, and I'm sure there is much more out there. Over the years that's all I have been able to amass.

Lev Oborin and David Oistrakh are famous for an edition of the Beethoven sonatas, published in Russia.....

I have a four CD Philips box of the Beethoven Violin Sonatas by Oistrakh and Oborin. 486 406-2, recorded in Paris 1962. https://www.amazon.com/Beethoven-Violin ... dpSrc=srch

Yes, same one I have that Decca re-released on their own label. Doremi issued the complete violin and piano sonatas on their label [7807, 3 CDs] recorded live in Paris in 1962. I never got that set inasmuch as I was very happy with the Philips recording. Either way, I'm sure you cannot go wrong!

There is a new CD out from Russia of a live 1950 recital by Lev Oborin. It is kind of pricey for one CD.
