Post by Rach3 » Tue Nov 06, 2018 10:44 am

New Oxford Quartet with pianist Orion Weiss live in Chausson’s Op.21 Concerto for Piano,Violin and String Quartet , about 47 minutes into the program ( my cd different performers ):

https://www.rtbf.be/auvio/detail_concer ... id=2418843

Followed by a delightful work , and composer I’d not heard from before, the Suite for Piano, Op.124, “L’Ancienne Maison de Campagne “ , by Charles Koechlin,Deborah Richards, piano.Anyone here familiar with other Koechlin works could recommend ? TIA.

If you prefer not to use the Radio Belgium site, here are YT’s of each ; worth hearing I think.

Koechlin's Op.124 here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KcUM25aktY

While at it, you may also wish to hear Louis Vierne’s searing Piano Quintet ( mine a different cd than this YT ):

Hi, Rach3.

The Chausson was very well done, and beautifully recorded. Thanks. I'll listen to the others as time goes by...... :)

The Chausson Concerto for, Violin and String Quartet, Op. 21 is a work I have admired for a long time and have quite a few recordings of the work. The ones that immediately come to mind are with Jorge Bolet, piano; Itzhak Perlman, violin and the Juilliard Quartet on Columbia/Sony; Thibaudet, piano; Bell, violin; and friends on Decca; Barbizet, pianist and friends on EMI/Warner; Louis Kentner, piano; Yehudi Menuhin, Pascal Quartet on EMI; Alfred Cortot, piano, Jacques Thibaud, violin; International String Quartet on EMI (the big box!). I had the pleasure of preparing the piano for a live performance featuring the great Elmar Oliveira, violinist, but at this hour cannot think of the pianist's name, who was well known.

I listened to the Vierne with enjoyment. As I have posted before, Vierne was blind. I know how blind organists learn the music of others. (They memorize scores written in Braille.) How anybody who is blind composes them in the first place, I have no idea. It is easier to accept that Beethoven was deaf when he composed his greatest music. Salieri in the movie Amadeus notwithstanding, it is almost impossible to compose by dictation. The only exception I know of is Bach, who on his deathbed dictated his last composition, a chorale prelude, to one of his sons, who by that time could read his father's mind anyway.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Now that this thread has been revived again, I can mention my favorite Chausson piece and one of my favorite short orchestral works in general, the tone poem "Viviane." According to Arthurian legend, Viviane seduces the sorcerer Merlin and imprisons him in a tree; he is no longer able to help King Arthur, who in the tone poem rides past with his knights unaware that Merlin is near.

Gorgeous music, with some Wagnerian reminiscences.

I've found Chausson's description of what happens in the music. The symhonic poem comprises three episodes, which are described in a quotation that Chausson placed at the header of the score:
Ernest Chausson wrote:Viviane and Merlin in the forest of Brocéliande. Love scene.

Trumpet calls. Emissaries of King Arthur ride through the forest in quest of the Enchanter.Merlin remembers his mission. He seeks to flee and to escape Viviane's embrace.

Scene of the Enchantment - to keep him with her, Viviane puts Merlin to sleep and surrounds him with may-trees in blossom.

John, thanks for the Chausson, a new piece for me. Lovely! You inspired me to buy this excellent CD, which updates my up to now favorite recording of the Bb Symphony by Munch, which dates to the 1960's:
