Pianist Miguel Ituarte recreates a concert given by pianist Ricardo Viñes ( Debussy pal ) in 1905.

As I have the Marston Records cd of all Vines extant recordings, thought I’d give this recital a hear, especially since some “ obscure “ works and the pianist not known to me.

The Liszt needed more darkness, sonority , if Internet sound is accurate, too “ jeu perle” , for my taste, but ample technique and interesting narrative qualities.

Quite a pianistic range elsewhere ; De Beriot , Dubois , Scott interesting ; the Brahms Rhapsody same issues as the Liszt for me ; the Granados a fav of mine I try to play myself ; the “Islamey “ a bit of mess. Vines would have been more interesting overall , but bravo here to Ituarte for innovative, courageous programming :

Franz Liszt (1811-1886)
Piano Sonata in B minor, S.178

Alexis de Castillon (1838-1873)
Fantasy in D minor, from Suite No. Op 1

Camille Saint-Saens
Prelude and Fugue in F major, from Etudes, Op 52

Charles Auguste De Bériot (1802-1870)
Excerpts from Morceaux a rhythmes rompus, Op 56

Théodore Dubois (1837-1924)
Pensée intime from 3 Little Pieces; Les Myrtilles from Poèmes sylvestres

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Rhapsody in G major Op 79'2

Edvard Grieg (1843-1907)
Album Leaf and The Brook from Lyric Pieces

Cyril Scott (1879-1970),Alexander Borodin (1833-1887)
Dagobah; Scherzo in A flat major

Albéniz (1860-1909),Enrique Granados (1867-1916),Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev (1837-1910)
Torre Bermeja; Oriental; Islamey

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) ,
3 excerpts from Op 118, Nos.5,3,6

Ah, the Age when men were men !
