Alan Feinberg, pianist

Post by Lance » Tue Jan 15, 2019 1:37 am

I've been surveying my recordings of New York-born ALAN FEINBERG in preparation for a future radio broadcast (or two). He is in a unique position among pianists in that his performances and recordings pair old music with new. He seems to be successful with that approach, more so than other pianists. Some years ago, the Argo (under British Decca) released a series of LPs, all of which found their way to CD. One of them, "The American Virtuoso," contains music of Gottschalk, Amy Beach, Gershwin, MacDowell, Fauré/Grainger, Grainger, Carreno, and Wodehouse and appears in Decca's 55-CD boxed set, The Piano Edition. Others discs took similar titles. He has recorded Bach, Don Gillis, Babbitt, and many others.

My question: So - why don't we hear more from him?

He's the wrong Feinberg. Have many or any of Samuil Feinberg's recordings made it to CD?

Arbiter Records has 2 cd's I have of Samuil Feinberg's playing, including a wonderful Scriabin 5th Sonata and " Appassionata." At YT I believe. Not sure about APR.

Samuil Feinberg recorded a great deal of Bach, ikncluding both books of the Well Tempered Clavier. Haven't heard them as they weren't at the Four Contginents Book Store of ancient memory.

Indeed, Samuil Feinberg's recordings have made it to CD. These are the ones I have:

•Arbiter 118: First recordings 1929-1948, Bach, Beethoven, Scriabin
•Melodiya 1001005: Feinberg Piano Cto., his Piano Suite, Beethoven Sonata, Op. 22
•Monopole 020: Beethoven Sonatas 4,11,19,20 (r.1950s)
•Russian CD (RCD) 16231: Bach WTC, Books I/II (r.1950s)
•Saison Russe (Russia) 788.032: Scriabin played by Feinberg and other pianists
•SMC (Russia) 0026: Previously unissued recordings. Bach, Chopin, Feinberg compositions
•RCA/Melodiya 25172 [11 CD set]: Russian Piano School with one disc by Feinberg

And I have some Melodiya LPs with Feinberg as pianist.
