Strauss' Piano Quartet

Post by Rach3 » Fri Feb 15, 2019 2:30 pm

Thought perhaps worth mentioning as suspect not heard often, my first hearing, a live performance Feb.12,2019 at the De Doelen by the Corneille Piano Quartet:

Richard Freed discusses the 45-minute work of 19-year old Strauss :

Also on the program the great Brahms Op.60 Piano Quartet, and Mozart’s K.493 Piano Quartet.

Indeed, not a well known work by this composer. Near as I can determine, the only recording I have on CD is on the Dabringhaus und Grimm label [6431335], which had high praise over any of the other near dozen recorded versions. You have given me food for thought to do a program on "Richard Strauss: His Unknown Works." Thank you!

I believe I have also heard his early Violin Concerto and Violin Sonata , possibly also an early piano sonata. Here is a list I found : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_c ... rd_Strauss

Thanks for posting that page, Rach3! I just heard the Strauss, and it's pleasant enough, but not a major piece. The Violin Sonata, however, is delightful and has been recorded by Heifetz; a personal favorite of mine. I'll be listening to the Brahms next on the same page. I also have the Strauss Violin Concerto in my collection, and, IMHO, it's not worth my time to hear it again.
