Michael Tippett's Piano Concerto

Post by Rach3 » Thu Apr 25, 2019 3:42 pm

The Tippett PC, not heard live that often, even in the UK? My recording is EMI cd with Ogdon/Davis/Philharmonia. BBC presenter reports that Julius Katchen was to premiere the work, but felt it unplayable (even by Katchen ??!!), so Louis Kentner replaced him.

From BBCR3 ( in “ immersive sound “ )
“ Live from the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester,April 25,2019.”

Sibelius: Symphony No. 6
Tippett: Piano Concerto
Music interval (CD)
Stravinsky: Symphony in C
Steven Osborne (piano)
BBC Philharmonic
Andrew Davis (conductor)

“ … Steven Osborne joins the BBC Philharmonic for Tippett's Piano Concerto, music of lyrical beauty influenced by his opera The Midsummer Marriage. It shuns the hard-nosed serialism pervading Europe in the 1950s in favour of an attempt to exploit the piano's lyrical rather than percussive characteristics and is unashamedly influenced by Beethoven's piano concertos…”

I have the Chandos recording with an English pianist whose name I can't recall off hand, with Richard Hickox and the Bournemouth symphony orchestra . It's couples with Tippett's first symphony .
Excellent performances of interesting, rarely heard works by one of England's greatest composers .
