Michael Tippett’s Piano Sonata No. 4 ( 1983/4), live at Royal Academy of Music London,2014, pianist Thomas Ang:

Interesting. Lyrical. Will require more hearings. The “ fast “ mov. is a real technical tour de force. I have an EMI cd of John Ogdon playing Tippett’s 2nd Sonata ( and PC ) , which I liked a lot, so listened here.

I have the Ogdon performances of Sonatas 1/2, and also the four Tippett sonatas with Paul Crossley on the CRD label - and enjoy them very much. Phyllis Sellick also recorded Sonata No. 1 (Somm label) as did Murray Perahia for Sony.

When she started to play, Mr. Steinway came down and personally
rubbed his name off the piano. [Speaking about pianist &*$#@+#]

I'm a Tippett fan of long standing, and am always pleased when someone takes on one of his difficult scores -- and they're all mind-bogglingly difficult. Ang seems to have really gotten this well under his fingers, and yeah, the fast movement is really quite exhilerating. Tippett's last piano sonata is the most expansive, and I think it might be a bit over-long.

This sonata marks at least the second time he helped himself to the majestic opening of his Fourth Symphony (it also occurs in his oratorio The Mask of Time). The passage must have had a personal significance to him.

I'm glad to hear a new interpretation of this music.
