Park Avenue Armory Unveils Its 2020 Season

Among the highlights are a commission for Bill T. Jones, a staging of Monteverdi by Pierre Audi, and Alex Lawther in “Hamlet.”

A large-scale premiere by the choreographer Bill T. Jones, a production of “Hamlet” starring Alex Lawther and appearances by opera stars including the tenor Jonas Kaufmann are among the 2020 season offerings the Park Avenue Armory announced on Tuesday.

The programming was organized by Pierre Audi, the armory’s artistic director, and opens with his staging of Monteverdi’s “Maria Vespers,” which premiered at the Holland Festival in 2017. Planned for the immense Wade Thompson Drill Hall, this production of the 17th-century piece features an immersive set with Berlinde De Bruyckere’s haunting wax sculpture “Cripplewood” as its centerpiece. Raphaël Pichon will conduct the orchestral and choral ensemble Pygmalion in the program, which runs March 21-29.

Mr. Jones’s premiere, “Deep Blue Sea,” is scheduled in the Drill Hall April 14-25 in a production presented with New York Live Arts, the home of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company. In a rare move, Mr. Jones will perform in the work, made for 100 dancers and including scenic design by the architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro — of the High Line, the Shed and the Museum of Modern Art expansion.

The “Hamlet” — in repertory with “Oresteia,” both directed by Robert Icke (“1984”) originally for the Almeida Theater in London — will receive an unusually long run for the Armory; the shows begin performances in early June and continue through Aug. 15. Mr. Lawther (“The End of the ____ing World”) will star as Hamlet. Lia Williams will reprise her Olivier Award-nominated turn as Klytemnestra in “Oresteia,” adapted by Mr. Icke for a single, three-hour evening.

Donnacha Dennehy’s opera “The Second Violinist,” written and directed by Enda Walsh, will have its North American premiere Sept. 25-29. The two collaborated on the often baffling and elusive “The Last Hotel” in 2015; their latest effort tells the story of a violinist who, overwhelmed by modern life, finds solace in the Renaissance music of Carlo Gesualdo. Ryan McAdams will conduct.

Schubert’s “Schwanengesang,” a collection of the composer’s final songs made into a cycle by his publisher, will receive a staging by Claus Guth Oct. 16-20, performed by the star tenor Mr. Kaufmann. And, to close the season, the artist Rachel Rose will present her video installation “Enclosure,” commissioned by the Armory and the LUMA Foundation, Dec. 9-Jan. 10.

The Armory’s diverse programming beyond the Drill Hall includes a celebration of the 19th Amendment’s centennial, “100 Years | 100 Women.” The Recital Series will feature the cellist Nicolas Altstaedt in Bach’s six suites and the ensemble Alarm Will Sound in John Luther Adams’s “Ten Thousand Birds,” spread throughout the Armory’s various rooms.

Among the singers giving recitals are the soprano Rosa Feola, who had a celebrated Metropolitan Opera debut in “Rigoletto” last season; the mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton; and the bass Günther Groissböck, making his New York recital debut after numerous appearances at the Met, most recently in Wagner’s “Ring.”
