Anthony Davis Wins 2020 Music Pulitzer

Post by Modernistfan » Tue May 05, 2020 8:37 am

Anthony Davis, now professor of music at the University of California San Diego, has won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Music for his opera "The Central Park Five," about the notorious New York City case in which five black teenagers were accused of assaulting and raping a jogger in the park. They were convicted despite a lack of evidence, and served years in prison, but the convictions were eventually overturned and vacated. Davis is African-American. He is one of the African-American composers I mentioned when I criticized the earlier Pulitzer Prize to Kendrick Lamar. His music mixes jazz and other music derived from African-American culture with advanced techniques derived from composers such as Schoenberg and Stravinsky. I have most of the available recordings of his music, but there is no recording available yet for "The Central Park Five."
