David Lang's "Prisoner of the State" on Decca

Post by Modernistfan » Thu Jun 11, 2020 6:10 pm

Well, following Julia Wolfe's "Fire in My Mouth," an oratorio or cantata about the Triangle Shirtwaist fire in New York in 1911, we now have another politically-charged work composed by one of the members of Bang on a Can, David Lang, an opera entitled "Prisoner of the State," and again released on Decca. This is a reworking of the Fidelio story. This will be released on Decca in a month or so, again conducted by Jaap van Zweden with the New York Philharmonic. I may seriously have underestimated Maestro van Zweden's commitment to contemporary music; mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.
