Pianist Philipp Kopachevsky

Post by Rach3 » Sun Nov 22, 2020 11:35 am

A pianist I have followed since 2011 , when he should have been a finalist, perhaps winner at the Tchaikovsky Competition ( Trifonov won ) . Decided to see what he was doing of late. First, a refresher of notable performances from that 2011 Competition:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVy5bs5XAvE ( Ravel, “ La Valse “ )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKWL_sgsNIk&t=40s ( Rachmaninoff, Piano Sonata No. 2 )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNXKvyr9_is&t=7s ( Schumann, “Kreisleriana” )

Both Ravel concertos, live in Moscow, Oct.2, 2020 . I heard only the Left-Hand starting about 22 :38 in , as I dont care much for the G major, the Left-Hand one of my fav PC’s of all PC’s:

The Brahms 3rd Piano Sonata from his 2019 2-cd set of that Sonata and the complete Opa.116-119.Whole cd here :

I heard only YT Sonata , Op.119 ( about 1:40:00 in ) , and Op.118, # 2 ( about 1:18:00 ) as I try to play that Op.118 , but I do not have the cd set.In the Sonata,Kopachevsky darker, more introverted reading than another youngster I follow, Lukas Vondracek , in the same Sonata, but Brahms in good hands with both. I purchased earlier Kopachevsky’s debut cd of Scriabin Preludes ,10th Sonata and late Liszt. He also has a cd of the Liszt B minor Sonata and Janacek 1905 Sonata I have not heard.

Am currently listening to the very well-recorded Brahms CD on amazon HD. Kopachevsky is really fine, with a full, round tone that is essential to Brahms and which reminds me very much of my favorite recording of the Sonata III by Perahia. He has an elegant touch that's never shy about dynamic range, and the musical discipline and technique to be effective in even the most complex passages.

A real find, and I agree that he should have won a prize. Thanks!

Kopachevsky plays " images from the Great Siege" by contemporary composer Alexey Shor, a bit of a modern - day Schumann. My first hearing of the composer.

To continue my observations from yesterday:

Heard the rest of the Brahms CD, or at least tried to. The later short pieces were not payed to my taste, frankly, although upon again hearing the Sonata III, I still admire Kopachevsky's take on it very much. My problem with the Opp. 116, 117, 118 etc. is that Kopachevsky tries too hard. He makes the music too slow and profound, which these pieces decidedly are not. In fact, I experience these late works best as an intimate conversation between, say, a salon audience and the composer.

Richter was famous for his slow tempi in Schubert Sonatas here and there, and it sounds like Kopachevsky is emulating this approach, giving every note too much meaning, which is not an effective approach for me. Sokolov also doesn't "get" this music in his recent DGG concert release: he makes them too big and slightly bombastic, as I indicated in my recent review. The approach I like best in these among recent releases would be that of Nicholas Angelich, who has included them in his bargain all-Brahms box from Erato, all of which you can stream on amazon if you want. Included in the set are the 3 Piano Quartets with the Capucon brothers. Angelich's touch is a bit light for me in the Concertos, but the other works are seriously well-done.
