Robert Sherman Has Died

Post by Donald Isler » Wed Jun 28, 2023 4:07 pm

Robert Sherman, a very important figure at New York's classical music station, WQXR has died. He was a month shy of his 91st birthday. He only recently announced his retirement. He went to work at WQXR in 1956 (!) and had held every major position in the organization besides being the host of at least three shows. I was honored to appear on his morning program, The Listening Room, in 1986, and was very happy that he let me interview him some years ago. He was one of the "good guys" in the music field: always friendly, helpful and encouraging to younger colleagues. Something else he did, which was very important to him, was to make more of the recordings of his late mother, the pianist Nadia Reisenberg, available. He will be missed by many.

Very sorry to hear this. I used to listen to Robert Sherman on WQXR years before we had our own NPR stations. Insofar as his mother, Nadia Reisenberg, is concerned, I've collected her on LP/CD as much as possible. Reisenberg's recordings appear on Bridge, Delos, Naxos Historical, Ivory, Dutton, MCA, Tantara/Heritage, and IPAM. Some of these issues contain her wonderful Westminster recordings. Robert Sherman's aunt was Clara Rockmore, the theraminist, who also recorded with Nadia (on Bridge and Delos).
