A wonderful artist! I heard her several times, including at her last New York recital in 1972 at Hunter College, when she played this.

Great admirer of Novaes as well. Our late, great CMG founder, Ward Botsford, imparted some very good and interesting information about working with Novaes, including hearing dialogue during recording sessions. (She did have a bit of a temper.)
Her very early recordings (I think for Columbia or RCA) were remastered and appeared on a Pearl CD [0170]. Music & Arts issued a fine 2-CD set [1029] of unissued Columbia recordings from 1940-1947, including a live 1949 Town Hall recital. Notes were written by Ward Botsford.
Such wonderful treasures at our disposal!

Yes, Lance, I have that 2CD set floating around somewhere, and agree that the transfers are indeed impeccable.Music & Arts issued a fine 2-CD set [1029] of unissued Columbia recordings from 1940-1947, including a live 1949 Town Hall recital. Notes were written by Ward Botsford.
It pains me to say that Novaes recorded for Vox mostly, rather than for a full-priced label. Her artistry surely deserved the promotional heft of either Columbia or RCA back in the day.
When I was a lad of 11, our neighbor, who was a distant cousin and an organizer of the local concert series in my middle school auditorium and a pianist herself, invited me to escort her to a concert given by Guiomar Novaes, my first live event. I had just won the school's talent contest by playing some Liszt and Mendelssohn, so I readily agreed. Naturally, I was overwhelmed by her artistry, and asked if I could meet her after the concert and get her autograph. Novaes was gracious enough to scrawl her name across the front page of my program, saying encouraging bon mots as I stood in awe of this massive talent. Naturally, I've been an admirer ever since, and treasure her recordings in my library.

I've always returned time and again to her Debussy Preludes Book I on Vox. She did some of the best interpretations outside of Gieseking. I read later that she was dissatisfied with the way they turned out (recently, I DID notice a few slips to back this up!). But like Gilels, she always did things in an intriguing way.
Good music is that which falls upon the ear with ease and quits the memory with difficulty.

I must say that the live 1969 Rio de Janeiro performance Brian shared with us of Schumann's Carnival I thought to be a little on the sloppy side, something we don't find on her carefully made recordings. And so goes the story of live performances. Still, one can hear great artistry.
