Randy Neugebauer: I yelled 'baby killer'

Texas Republican Rep. Randy Neugebauer was the mysterious lawmaker that shouted “baby killer” during Rep. Bart Stupak’s (D-Mich.) floor speech Sunday night, his office said Monday.

Rumors that Neugebauer was the yeller began swirling Sunday night, after several lawmaker surmised that the scream was tinted with a southern accent.

“Last night was the climax of weeks and months of debate on a health care bill that my constituents fear and do not support,” Neugebauer said in a news release. “In the heat and emotion of the debate, I exclaimed the phrase ‘it’s a baby killer’ in reference to the agreement reached by the Democratic leadership. While I remain heartbroken over the passage of this bill and the tragic consequences it will have for the unborn, I deeply regret that my actions were mistakenly interpreted as a direct reference to Congressman Stupak himself.”

Neuegebauer’s scream was only part of Sunday’s mayhem in the Capitol. Tea party protesters screamed outside the Capitol, Republicans applauded when a man was carried out of the House gallery and then there was Neugebauer’s scream.

Neugebauer represents one of the most conservative districts in America – an area that stretches from the New Mexico border in the west to the central part of the state. He is in his third full term.

Perhaps most notably, Neugebauer was a co-sponsor to a March 2009 House resolution that would’ve required presidential candidates to provide a copy of their birth certificate.

“I have apologized to Mr. Stupak and also apologize to my colleagues for the manner in which I expressed my disappointment about the bill,” he said in a statement. “The House Chamber is a place of decorum and respect. The timing and tone of my comment last night was inappropriate."

Speaking of whether or not Congress is doing the will of the people, does anyone know, I mean really know, if these (to me bizarrely one-track-minded) anti-abortion congresspersons are actually further to the right on the subject than their own constituencies?

Yeah about as "classy" as the Democrat Congressman - Grayson - who said that the Republican health care plan was for people to "die quickly".

Maybe even as classy as Reblem - who says that we "take satisfaction in seeing people die" because they have no health insurance.

The Republicans deserve to get slammed for not making necessary cost-related health care reforms when they had the power to do so. But they most definitely have put up counter-plans to those put up by the Democrats. They obviously get shot right down by the majority party. That's their peroggative, but then don't turn around and deny a plan exists.

And on your last comment, do you think only the uninsured get an opinion on health care reform?

I don't know for sure if Randall supports any Republican plan that has been put forth, but he's indicated that he is currently without health insurance and he pretty clearly dislikes the Democratic plan.

What are the odds that people without health insurance are going to be on a board such as this? Zip, I say. What are the odds that people without health insurance know what the Republican position on health care was? 10 our of 9 people on this board with insurance don't know what the Republican proposal was. In fact, many pounded the table insisting that the Republicans had no plan, were only the party of 'no!' and other such ignorant nonsense. The uninsured tend to fall in to specific categories, none of which is particularly concerned about the health care debate in comparison to working or looking for a job or in college or too poor to waste time or money reading about politics or wasting time on a classical music board.

Rep. Randy Neugebauer was oh so sorry that he yelled "baby killer" at Bart Stupak during the debate over abortion language in the health bill. Now he's posted a fundraising video in which he essentially brags about his conduct, following in the footsteps of Joe "You lie!" Wilson, and done a victory lap on Hannity. As Steve Benen says in the Washington Monthly: "It creates a bizarre dynamic — GOP extremists now have an incentive to be as boorish as possible, in order to receive rewards from a radical base. Why be an obscure back-bencher in a small caucus when you can act like an idiot and become a Republican star?"

Granted, Grayson is hyperbolic at times and given to exaggeration, as, I confess, I am. But there is still no comparison.

Just before the shout of "Baby killer," the Chair had warned people in the gallery that their shouting and various disturbances were out of order. They were Tea Party types, and engaged in what seems to have been mob action. About 30 goper Congressmen on the floor were egging them on, further endangering the lives of the Capitol Police, who were trying to clear them out.

When Grayson made his remarks, he had been recognized by the chair to speak. He has, to my knowledge, never spoken out of order. There is no comparison between that and the mob action the gopers were encouraging, without the recognition of the Chair.
