Do you like beets?

Post by piston » Wed Jul 28, 2010 7:39 pm

It's an acquired taste. We use to grow them, at home, lots of them, but I didn't like them: boiled, pickled, or whatever. But my taste buds have been changing and I kind of like them now. Very nice sweet but healthy taste to them. In fact, one can make a chocolate cake entirely with beets!

I don't particularly like them but I use them for fresh juicing. They are supposed to be super healthy - the juice from them that is.

BTW, carrot juice was recommended to an acquaintance who caught TB while working in a hospital:
The properties within mint and carrot juice work to eliminate mucus as well as to purge the body of harmful toxins that accumulate through synthetic medications. The active ingredients in both juices work to clean the linings of the lungs to prevent further bacteria growth, which can slow the healing process. Both mint and carrot juice contain vitamins and nutrients that boost the immune system as well as promote overall well-being

When I was a kid, beets were my absolute favorite vegetable, and we, like you, piston, grew our own. They are no longer a favorite, but I do still like them. But its been a long time since I had any, so I think I'll start looking for them in the grocery store. Thanks for bringing it up.

I thought it was really cheating to do the usual thing, and put the beets in a separate side dish. I always liked to have them on the plate, with that deep violet juice insinuating itself into everything else on the plate. LOL. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I loved it.

Yuck. Never touch them. And I find the site of pickled beets disturbing.

They are nice pickled, and as borsch and kvass (lactic acid fermented). I'm growing Cylindra variety this year. But just plain boiled or baked beets? To each his own, but I don't think that's a traditional thing. More of a modern invention.

You've reminded me that they are one of the few things I have not tried as an adult eater, and I am quite omnivorous. My mother used to eat jarred pickled beets when I was a kid, but I wouldn't let that stop me from trying fresh now. Just haven't figured out how to work them into my cooking.

I avoided beets as a youth mostly because I thought they looked odd.

Upon trying them I have always liked them. I prefer to eat them plain or mix them into a salad.

Most people cook them and eat them as a separate, discrete dish. But if you want them to be part of a recipe, go to http://www.epicurious.com . They have this module where you can enter an ingredient and they will come up with recipes in which said ingredient is used.

Thanks. I use it frequently. Going to a potluck tonight where my dish is informed by that site. The exact recipe is, of course, my own. 8)

I never liked them in any form. A couple years ago though I ordered a salad in a fine restaurant that had beets and I discovered my tastes had changed. Still not a favorite I go out of the way to make, but I do like them now. Especially cold. I discovered the same thing about other foods. I think as we get older our taste buds get old and dull or just burned out and the foods we couldn't tolerate before no longer have such a strong taste. Probably what little kids rarely like strong tasting foods like broccoli or spinach.

We once made a "chocolate" cake from beets and told the kids it was chocolate. They never saw the difference.....

Beets are rather a fashionable item on restaurant menus these days. I had never seen them anywhere I would normally eat, but a few days ago my sister and I had dinner at the Grist Mill in Warrensburg, NY, a classy restaurant for around here that does all its business during the summer season. She ordered an appetizer of beets, scallops, and frisée which I got to taste. Whatever you may think about odd combinations, when a good chef makes them work they can be very good, and this was.

(Why does the spell check underline "combinations"?)
