About This S Who Is Famous Purely by Fluke, ...

Post by dulcinea » Sun Sep 09, 2012 10:15 am

... in what way is this S supposed to represent me, an unemployed 58 y/o with two college degrees who has more urgent things in mind than free contraception?

First, since I cannot think of a prominent figure who might qualify as "representing" you whose name begins with "S" (perhaps I am having a lapse), I am wondering if you are using it as an initial in place of a vulgar word, and if so, I must tell you that this is unacceptable on this board.

Second, you will not be 58 for a few more days. Don't have a birth date next door to mine and expect me to forget it.

Third, contraception is not free. What has changed under the ACA is that all private insurance plans are required to offer it as part of their coverage. Therefore, insurance premiums are going up to cover this. I for example am paying about $70 a year for contraception coverage.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

I'm guessing dulcinea is referring to Sandra Fluke, the recently-graduated lawyer who, as a law student spoke out for insurance coverage for contraceptives, after the ridiculous panel composed entirely of clergymen left out any female voice whatsoever. As you may recall now, she was called a "slut" and a "prostitute" by Rush Limbaugh for speaking up for women's contraceptive coverage.

She spoke at the DNC (I missed her speech) also.

And as the third person who is NOT 58 yet either (go, John!), I see no sense in dulcinea's comment about Fluke "representing" her. Uh, no...but dulcinea, are you also against insurance coverage for treatment of testicular cancer? You aren't "represented" by anyone in that group either. Sheesh.

Teresa

P.S. The point anyway is not just contraceptive coverage; it's also the rolling back of equality of human rights that is represented by this particular issue.

Yeah yeah, "slut," that's the word I thought she meant.

Sur l'autre main, I cannot for the life of me imagine why any guy in his right mind would want to have sex with that thing - she has a voice that would stop an eight day clock. He would have to be either drunk or crazy...take your pick.

Oh no, please don't blame all of us girls! I think it's just plain nastiness, rather disappointing coming from two women who ought to know better.

John, if you are paying $70 more a year for contraception coverage, you have an insurance company which is taking advantage of people. (Surprise, surprise!) During the campaign, Rick Santorum correctly pointed out that contraception coverage saves money. Its a lot less expensive than abortion, much less taking a fetus to term, much less covering the child through the age of 26. That's why the Obama Administration was able to get the insurance companies to promise to provide it for no extra charge.

I doubt that Blue Cross/Blue Shield is operating outside the law. Obviously there is a difference between a promise and a legal requirement.

(Rick Santorum said that? I'm impressed.)

Teresa, look at the original post of "What A Romney Means" and then you'll see true nastiness. So don't criticize Auntie and me until you admonish Cliftwood. Then maybe your words will carry more weight because they will be fair and impartial.

That Cardinal Dolan has way too much to say on this subject--Obama has to defend himself on the issue of religious freedom--it's awful! Regards, Len :(

I read the entire article in Cliftwood's post, but I don't see any equivalence. The article was clearly left-wing and leveled some nastiness at the Romney people. Fine, anyone who is running for public office is fair game for attacks. But what has that got to do with Auntie's gratuitous and vicious joke aimed at a bright young specific female attorney, calling her "that thing" with whom no guy in his right mind would have sex? This, when Fluke was only trying to defend insurance coverage for women's contraception?

My words may carry no weight at all; I was simply expressing my disappointment that two usually thoughtful women would make such mean-spirited fun of a young woman who is defending women's rights in this country. Remember, it was not so long ago that we didn't have the right to vote.

I assumed that Auntie Lynn was being flippantly satirical (especially since Fluke is in fact a bit of a cutey, voice included), though I didn't think it was very successful satire. Then I assumed Cosima also saw it that way but did see it as successful. So my "girl thing" meant (facetiously) "Why is that funny?"
