Sheila MacRae dies at 92

Post by jbuck919 » Sat Mar 08, 2014 5:52 pm

This is not an important celebrity death, but I am posting it for several reasons. First, her appearance on I Love Lucy was in an episode that featured the real Don Loper introducing various celebrity wives as models in his fashion show. You would never have guessed that "Mrs. Gordon MacRae" had any existence apart from being the wife of a star--she doesn't even look like the same woman from later times.

The second reason is to note, although this certainly does not make her unique, that she survived two of her children, one of whom, Meredith MacRae, was a beautiful TV actress in her own right, who (and I did not know this before) died at the age of 56 of brain cancer.

The third reason relates to her performance in the Jackie Gleason revival of The Honeymooners in segments on his 60s show. I watched these at the time with my father, and while they were inferior to the original, which I only saw in reruns, they were not awful. Since they coincided with her divorce from Gordon MacRae, my father was sure that the reason was that she was having an affair with Gleason. Now we can see that she had a choice from among many less, um, substantial alternatives. (I still don't know about June Taylor as in the June Taylor Dancers.)

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
