On Tuesdays during the summer I work at the library's concession booth for the town concert-in-the-park series (all country "music" and related stuff). I was thinking of getting a French flag and wishing everyone a "Bonne fête nationale" just as a conversation piece, but thought of it too late. Our Library Director (i.e., the one we pay actually to run the library) had a Haitien mother (white Haitian--yes there were some) and speaks both French and Creole. But as I learned in high school (already to my annoyance), and as is still practiced, French instruction is very Francocentric even though most Americans of French-speaking descent, like myself, come via Québec.

Other than that, like John F (apparently) I feel no need to participate in patriotic holidays, even my own (maybe especially my own these days). However, when Bastille Day comes around I am reminded of Ralph Stein, who every year would drop hints about the upcoming celebration. It was also his birthday, you see.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

When I was in school, the French we were taught was the Parisian dialect which is used in most French literature. French Canada and Canadian French weren't even mentioned, and I suppose that except in the states that border on Québec and among tourists who go to Montréal, Americans are little aware of it.

There was a party last night at the French Consulate here in Boston, to which I had gone, if today were not a workday : )

Cheers,

July 4 I cooked our first lobsters of the season-$6.99 a pound with the Shoprite Card-and also the first fresh corn of the season from our local farm market--later we watched the Macys fireworks on TV at home-we turned it on at 9:15-the show started at 8 so we avoided all the hype! Regards, Len :)

Glad people enjoyed the 4th and the 14th. My reference to Bastille Day, as JBuck probably realized, was in remembrance of Ralph.

Played French music on the job all day - and there's a LOT of it...
