Good Thing On Kim Davis Case

Post by lennygoran » Wed Sep 09, 2015 8:05 am

The one good thing about the clerk's pathetic contempt case is maybe what Trump has said on the issue will wind up hurting him with his conservative base-that would be great-can't wait for the debate! Huckabee yesterday-despicable! Regards, Len

"Washington (CNN)Republican front-runner Donald Trump said Friday that he wished a Kentucky county clerk, Kim Davis, was not jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, but he added that the Supreme Court has ruled and it is "the law of the land."

"You have to go with it. The decision's been made, and that is the law of the land," the real estate mogul said Friday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Trump declined to weigh in on the issue Thursday -- stating during a press conference he wasn't very familiar with the issue -- but said Friday that Davis should have let her deputies in the office certify the marriages. Davis's attorney said Friday that she has no intention to resign.

"I would say the simple answer is let her clerks do it," he said. "Now from what I understand she's not letting the clerks do it either. The other simple answer is rather than going through this -- because it's really a very, very sticky situation and terrible situation -- 30 miles away they have other places, they have many other places where you get licensed. And you have them actually quite nearby, that's another alternative."

Trump's position puts him at odds with many of his primary opponents who have trumpeted Davis' fight as one for religious liberty.

Davis, the clerk of Rowan County, was jailed Thursday after refusing to allow her five deputy clerks to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples."

I've mentioned this in another thread. It's just about the only sensible thing Trump has said since he injected himself into the Republican primaries race. It won't hurt him a bit, saying that this woman shouldn't disobey the law, and may actually give him some credibility he doesn't deserve.

Well you may be right but I sure hope it hurts him-we'll see. I believe the candidates will be asked about that on the debate. Regards, Len

Just who does this Kim Davis woman think she is that she can defy the Supreme Court? Why can't people just "live and let live"? Why does she think she has the right to force her religious beliefs on fellow human beings?

Huckabee is totally nuts.

"Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing has happened."
-Winston Churchill

–Charles Mackay

"It doesn't matter how smart you are - if you don't stop and think."
-Thomas Sowell

"It's one of the functions of the mainstream news media to fact-check political speech and where there are lies, to reveal them to the voters."

I don't agree that it's the only sensible thing he's said, but I definitely agree it's sensible and won't hurt him (and may even help him somewhat).

Right. Really ridiculous, but I do agree she shouldn't have been jailed.

It's been awhile hasn't it?

No, I have no thoughts whatsoever about moving to NYC. Oh horrors!

By now Len, I'd have thought that you'd come to your senses and come down here to the sunny South. Can you grow hibiscus up there? I've got a beauty with huge red blooms. I just ordered some of these: http://www.brecks.com/product/mocha-moon-hibiscus

Cosi we've had very limited luck with hibiscus-we visit private gardens where they look beautiful-still we've given up trying. OTOH we do have about 12 rose of sharon trees-their flowers look like the hibiscus and they are completely hardy for us-see below! As for heading south we had a great trip to Charleston, SC in early April-that's when you want to be there! Regards, Len :)

Oh Len, those are gorgeous. You and Sue must have green thumbs. And speaking of green, I'm green with envy.

My apologies for high jacking this thread. This is my first day back after a long absence and already I'm misbehaving. :(

Cosima, it is good to hear from you.

Again, this is a non-story, a media event. The battle for gay rights has been pretty much won, partly because the Republicans realize that they can pay only lip service to the issue and not lose any votes. The real news, the stuff that should be on the front page every day, is all the unchecked ways in which they still want to impose an order that will make the Gilded Age look like the golden age for working people.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
-- Johann Sebastian Bach
